We are beyond honored to welcome the 11th Cohort of 4th World Media Lab Fellows, a constellation of deeply creative, community-rooted Indigenous artists living across Turtle Island and Pasifika, whose work reflects both rigor and heart.

This year, a central theme will be outreach, impact, and distribution at a time when everything feels newly in flux. Traditional pathways are shifting, and old gatekeepers are losing relevance. In their place, community-centered frameworks are emerging with models grounded in relationship, reciprocity, and narrative sovereignty.

How do you define freedom?

So it’s the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, and I’ve been thinking a lot about what freedom has meant, who it’s reached, who it’s left behind, and what kind of country we’re still capable of becoming.

I believe we can celebrate hope without rewriting history. We can tell the truth about the pain, honor the people who carried it, and keep building a future where freedom belongs to more of us.

I believe it’s possible. Not because optimism is easy, but because the alternative is too bleak… and because it’s true.

Beautiful things happen when ordinary people refuse to stop believing in each other.

That’s why I’m honored to support @peoplesbillofrights250 250: a nonpartisan civic initiative inviting Americans to help shape the next chapter by sharing their ideas about freedom, rights, and the future we want to build together. Your voice matters. It really does.

Jody Potts-Joseph begins her 1,000-mile journey across Alaska.

The Hän Gwich’in musher and First Alaskans star has begun the 2026 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race — a nearly 1,000-mile route from Anchorage to Nome that takes about 10 days.

Dog mushing has been part of Alaska Native lifeways for generations, connecting communities across the land long before the arrival of snowmobiles and other modern transportation.

At the ceremonial start, her sled dogs wore hand-beaded blankets created by Native women across Alaska, Canada, and the Lower 48, honoring the journey before the team set off on the trail.

Her daughter, model Quannah Chasinghorse, joined her during the ceremonial start in Anchorage before the race officially began.

Now the journey to Nome is underway.

Ten years ago I went to Sundance for the first time with my dear friend @susanfroemke . People told me to soak it all up. They said that for most filmmakers Sundance is a once in a lifetime experience. A single moment you carry with you forever.

Little did I know that I would come back again. Ten years. Ten films. Ten returns to that thin air where cinema feels necessary and urgent and alive. Where storytelling is not content but communion. Where documentary filmmaking feels like a shared act of listening and witnessing.

This year was meant to be special. The last Sundance in Park City. A closing chapter. I was deeply looking forward to being there to celebrate the art form with "Give me the Ball" by @lizfgarbus and @billiejeanking . The craft. The community. To sit in dark rooms with strangers and feel something together. To honor the work and the people who make it.

But instead I was called elsewhere. I am now in Minneapolis to document a social dynamic reshaping our country in real time. I am deeply humbled by what I am witnessing. By how an entire state rises up. Organizes. Holds grief and rage and hope all at once. By people showing up for each other in these moments of raw, fragile historic dynamics.

This is why I do this work. This is what I love so much, being present when things are uncomfortable. When they are unresolved. When people are at their most vulnerable and the story is still forming. I believe deeply in bearing witness. In slowing down. In listening. In documenting not from a distance but from within the human mess of it all.

I missed Sundance this year. And I felt that loss. The festival taught me many things over the last decade. About cinema. About courage. About craft. About what it means to return again and again not for recognition but for purpose.

But sometimes the work asks you to be somewhere else. And you go.

With gratitude for the ten times that shaped me. With reverence for the stories still unfolding. With humility for the responsibility of witnessing them. @sundanceorg @canonusaprovideo

Back when I lived on Poli, mornings started in the dark—loading bikes and shovels onto the ATV and heading up the hill to dirt jump before work.
So many memories up there… and plenty of injuries.
One morning ended with a shoulder dislocated so badly they had to put me under—four doctors to get it back in. I eventually had a bone-block surgery (new at the time), grafting part of my collarbone with a big screw to keep everything in place. Years later, still holding strong! 📷 @kerioberly
