National Award‑winning documantry The Unreserved at TOSS

A special screening was held at TOSS Jaipur of Samarth Mahajan’s National Award‑winning documentary The Unreserved. The film maps the lives, struggles and small hopes of passengers who travel in Indian Railways’ unreserved (general) compartments—the cheapest, most crowded way to move across the country.

Over roughly 265 hours of train travel across 10 journeys, Samarth and his two‑person crew recorded hundreds of conversations from Baramulla to Kanyakumari, shaping them into an hour‑long portrait of working‑class India on the move. The movie was screened as a part of ongoing Basic Course in Smartphone Documentary headed by Shilpi and Keya in association with FTII. Samarth was present at the screening for discussion and QnA.

TOSS Jaipur concluded the @ftiiofficial workshop in Basics of smartphone documentary filmmaking with mentors @keya.vaswani and @shilpibatra2 awarding certificates to the participants. It culminated with their two minute video projects that they made during the 8 day workshop. A beautiful day and lots of love and laughter. We wish participants the best and looking forward to how they begin their journey with their unique stories and newly learnt skill.
Missing a few in the pictures but our very best to each one enrolled in the course. We welcome you to our TOSS community

Having @some.arth.mahajan come to @tossjaipur for the screening of The Unreserved was truly delightful and enriching. One, it was the culmination of our wonderful workshop in Basics of Smartphone Documentary, second it was right next day to the screening of @par_kati and team’s Mast Mahila Mandali. To have filmmakers come together organically where participants could witness a beautiful exchange, powerful discussion, also understanding the process directly from filmmakers, completed the whole circle. We have talked enough about this week, but the love we feel, the satisfaction of completion, can’t express enough of that.
The course was mentored by @keya.vaswani and @shilpibatra2

Every year, we meet to talk about cinema that makes us look a little closer at the country we live in.

Last year, we spoke about the politics of cinema caste, class, region, electoral , and everything that shapes the way we see the world.

This year, the conversation moves towards dissent.

Cinema that questioned the system.
Cinema that challenged the dominant narrative.
Cinema that dared to ask, what if we don’t agree?

Join us for a conversation on Cinema of Dissent and the films that chose to speak when silence was easier.

22 August | 5–8 PM

A glimpse from our last Basics of Smartphone Documentary workshop at TOSS Jaipur, conducted by the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune.

Eight days of making, learning, experimenting and telling stories with the most accessible filmmaking tool we have: the smartphone.

Along the way, participants explore the fundamentals of documentary storytelling, visual language, sound, interviewing, shooting and editing, while finding their own voice as storytellers.

We’re doing it again.

Friendships that made their ways into my life, thanks to cinema.
The tribe created owing to common love and passion for the movies.
From talking movies with other cinephiles, to studying cinema with them to creating a community of Cinema & Beyond , these are some very special people who listened and made space for a loner who had nowhere to go with her love for movies.
Some will appear in the second part.

June 🌼

May June disperse all the tightness,
May June flower like the closed bud waiting to spread its fragrance.
May June release the old patterns that showed up in May.

May June arrive with fresh prespectives and new promises.

And even if it doesn’t;
May we be gentle and hold ourselves with blessed pauses, deep yet light breaths and much love.

Ju-st be this Ju-ne!

Hope you like this - wrote this while practising yoga outdoors this morning.
Getting routinely started after a while. The tightness is taking time to ease, but I honour the physical pain in these moments of peace.

Joining my spunky #ww gang with a poem and some serene moments. You guys are fabulous!
