Khalid Albaih on Sudan: how the militia that carried out genocide in Darfur became the RSF, and why the war came only after every other attempt to crush the 2019 revolution had failed.

The final stretch for Strata.

After a long time designing, printing, assembling, sanding and finishing it by hand, the piece is finally coming together. There is still some work to do before November, but I’m excited to see it slowly leave the workshop and become the piece I had in mind.

Strata was produced at @liwan.qa and will be presented with @fromm.lab for the interlaced dialogues in design, curated by @studio__etiennebastormagi as part of the @designdohabiennial from 5 November to 31 January in Doha, Qatar.

I can’t wait to finally share the finished piece in public.

1-54 is delighted to be working with Almas Art Foundation to bring a curated selection of publications from their collection to our London Bookshop.

The selection brings together publications exploring African and African diasporic art, culture, and history, spanning artists’ books and exhibition publications to independent and cultural presses.

Among the titles joining the collection is Moridja Kitenge Banza’s new monograph, Mille et une façons d’en parler / A Thousand Ways to Talk About It, published by PHI, Montreal and Figure.1 Publishing, Vancouver. The publication accompanies Moridja’s current exhibition at Almas Art Foundation, From Above, Everything Looks Beautiful, on view until 31 October 2026.

We’re also pleased to introduce a dedicated shelf of ARAK books within the 154 Bookshop, bringing together a selection of publications from across the African continent and diaspora.

It was truly an honor to curate @khalidalbaih's solo show for @middleastnow.festival titled “Revolution, Intermission.” It has been a privilege to work so closely with amazing Sudanese artists over the course of this year like Mohammed Omer Khalil and Khalid Albaih who we are lucky to have to preserve the memory of our history. The images in Khalid’s exhibition explore the “break” in the period between the revolution and the counterrevolution to center the agency and power of all those dedicated to the Sudanese revolutionary struggle… Included in the carousel is the curatorial statement and the list of works in the exhibition. A million thanks to @nourkhalil2 who captured these moments that I will never forget 😇🌟
