'Afternoon Tea at Two'. Performance-Video(2016)
[Spoken Word]“The power surged. What became is what should be. I become the desired, I become a creation, and I become the voices of others as my own voice becomes silenced. From birth I was placed in a box, your own limitations which created my own boundaries, not wrapped in fragile blanketed tape or handle with care labels, only the material of the container I was placed within shielding me, a container, I was contained. Only one blue label and a burden of terms and conditions is all that was presented.
An affair occurred, I fell in love with hate because the boy was not being a boy; the man was not being a man. The man who once was and the man who I should be, a contradiction to myself, allowing no room to breath. Yourself, a man, but how one has to be. Not a delicate flower, an indulgence, or saccharin with tea.
You gratify yourself, take a slice, and wait. It is a distasteful indulgence, deluged in cake.
His face covered in sweetness, the man becomes pink. Doused in glitter, the man becomes pink. Delicately yet downright masked, he becomes blinded and intolerable, sightless to what should not be. Foreign, diseased with beauty, elegance, emotions, and fragility, he sparkles brightly. Gleaming and feeling, enriching himself in the sweet softness, still delicate, fragile, and desirable as can be. Presented to him, distanced from a struggle and strangle, It is placed upon himself, a different angle. Choice and freedom…. humanity.’”#selfportrait #nilikkhimaniart #nilikkhimaniartist #londonartist #londonart #nilikkhimani #education #culture #indianartist #abstract #contemporaryart #painting #painter #mixedmedia #installation #performance #artist #art #exhibition #photography #videoart #london #masculinity

Nilik Khimani, ‘66 Degrees North’. 1 of 1 Edition Book. (2014) . [Preview] Digital Prints in Black Organic Fully Recycled Book. .

As today is Earth Day I thought I would revisit this old piece. This Photobook was created in 2014 following a 4 day trip through the Golden Triangle in Iceland during April 2014; 66 degrees north. A truly incredible place that allows you to see into this planet, as well as the affects of man on nature and nature on man. A reminder we are only guests on this planet. 🙏🏾💚🌍.

“Untitled”. A part of “They Abstracted”. Acrylic on Canvas. 50x40cm. 2021

More of the series to come. This series of 5 titled “They Abstracted “ is a personal series responding to the (lack of) global media coverage of the Farmers protest in India, in particular Gujarati farmers, where more than 50% of the state land is dedicated to agriculture, for most, a means of survival.

I made the decision to have no personal pronouns in the title of the series to Indicate that the issues not only effected me, you, a singular, a stereotype, but an entire community of people globally, of all backgrounds and genders.

The paintings itself are a fragmented version of the Word “Kisaan” written in Hindi, which translates to Farmer in English.

I chose to abstract the formation of the typography because as a population of people, we were abstracted internationally and domestically, hence the name. Through formlessness, removing the Hindi language from the typography also acknowledges the impact the farmer reforms have had on a broad scale, within the diverse cultures of India, not all speaking Hindi.

Somewhat violent and wounded works, painted in a style to imitate worn out muralist and protest propaganda to reflect the brutality and hardship that the protesters are subjected to.

I have been reflecting a lot on my creative practice as it’s stands...

Anyone suffering with self-doubt, low self-worth, and (lack of ) career induced anxiety, I feel you. And to everyone trying to carve a career by themselves...You are not alone with these feelings. You owe it to yourself to keep trying, but try not to lose yourself in the process. 🧡
