WHO GETS TO WRITE THE ARCHIVE?

Being part of Parliament of the Wild was more than being part of an exhibition.

It was an opportunity to interfere with the record.

ART AFRICA gave artists access to its archive — pages that had already decided what, and who, was worth documenting. We took those pages and asked a different question:

What happens when the archive speaks back?

We painted over it. Cut into it. Reworked it. Questioned it.

For HIMAF, that gesture felt familiar.

I’ve always been interested in the things we overlook — materials, stories, people, places — and what happens when we refuse to leave them where we found them.

The archive isn’t finished.

Neither are we.

Kanti senzeni!?

What have we done, and what are we still capable of imagining?

Honoured to have been part of Parliament of the Wild with ART AFRICA and the artists who helped turn the archive into contested ground.

HIMAF.

From Installation to Inspiration

When Bafana Zembe was first called to install at The Art Quarter, the task seemed straightforward. Yet, upon engaging with the space, he recognized its deeper potential not just as an art handler, but as an artist in his own right. Returning to install another booth during the same week as the Joburg Art Fair, Zembe embraced the challenge of transforming chaos into coherence.

Choosing the most unconventional corner — scattered with chairs, tables, cables, cushions, and mirrors he declared: “I will make this work. I have an idea.” What followed was a process of moving, sketching, and calling collaborators, some of whom missed the moment. The result: a spontaneous gallery, a testament to turning possibility into presence.

Rather than waiting for others, Zembe infused the space with his own paintings and sculptures, works created during his free time. One piece, Land of My People, became an interactive puzzle of 180 pieces. Visitors were invited to join the fragments together, embodying the philosophy of Ubuntu unity through collective effort. Each puzzle piece symbolized how individuals, when connected, form a greater whole.

This act of engagement transformed the studio into more than a showcase; it became a participatory dialogue between artist and audience, archive and future.

I am going to leave this archive here 🧰🧩✍🏿💯📝
