A girls’ night in with cheese, wine, and friends who make you feel like, “Wait, I can actually do this.” 🥹🍷

We caught up, talked about our goals, and somewhere along the way started brainstorming and creating together. Art, business, content creation. Everyone had something they wanted to bring to life, and everyone had ideas for each other.

It feels really good to say a dream out loud and have your friends get excited with you. To have people who see what you’re capable of and remind you when you need it.

More nights like this, please. 🤍

He gave her a custom painting of flowers from her wedding bouquet to celebrate one year of marriage.

I interpreted the bouquet into three flowers to tell the story of their marriage in one painting. A rose bud for the start, a mid bloom for the immediate future and a full bloom for their golden years together.

Send this to someone who needs a wedding anniversary gift idea, or save it for yours.

Follow along to see when I make and how I think about my art practice.

Which number resonated with you?

Art gave me the space to hear my own thoughts and get to know myself.

“Act with urgency” and “ship the MVP” may be good for hitting OKRs and KPIs. But when I’m in my art studio, I tune into how I feel and take the time I deserve.

Thanks for following along my 5 Things That Art Taught Me series. Which of the 5 hit closest to home for you?

What if you tried something without knowing how it would turn out?

I paint with watercolor, and it’s taught me to let the water decide what it wants to do. At first, not knowing the outcome made me uncomfortable. I’d try setting it up so I could predict exactly where the paint would flow.

But some things won’t bend to your will, and sometimes it works out better that way.

As a woman who lives a bit unconventionality, people like to give me advice. As someone who came back to art in their late 30s, I'm getting better at listening to my instinct.

Some people mean well. Others are coming at it with their own biases. ⁣
⁣
Either way, I’m getting better at trusting my own sense of what’s right for me, so I can decide if what they say is actually helpful. ⁣

If you’re a recovering people pleaser, I hope this helps.

I used to think that if people didn’t like my work, I’d done something wrong or hadn’t tried hard enough.

Now I know not everyone is going to like me and stopped trying so hard at doing the impossible. And you know what? It feels really good.

Over the next 5 days, I’ll share what I’ve learned since starting to paint again.⁣
⁣
Part 1 of 5: Working and living in New York City is stimulating and exciting, but I also need quiet time alone. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Making art gives me the mental space to slow down and reconnect with myself and my thoughts. Living alone may sound boring, but I cherish my space (even though it’s tiny, in true NYC fashion) because it gives me the freedom to explore my art practice.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
What do you do to slow down and reconnect with yourself? ⁣⁣

If you have a dream, it’s never too late to start. I wanted to be an artist when I was younger, but started my career in corporate America. A few years ago, I started to paint again. Follow @kandeatelier if you’d like to see what I make.
