FAHM is here, but it started for me last weekend in Seattle. Last Sunday, I spent the day learning more about the history of Filipino Town in Seattle with two great guides: Dev Cabano and Terrence from Filipino Town Magazine. My morning started at Carlos Bulosan’s grave, followed by a visit to Seattle’s Chinatown-International District, where much of the city’s Filipino history took root. I learned about the Alaskeros, Filipino migrant laborers who worked in Alaska’s salmon canneries and returned to Seattle during the off-season. Many lived in the CID’s single-room occupancy hotels, which became places to build community, share resources and organize for workers’ rights. Filipino life once stretched along King Street, with carinderias, shops and bathhouses. At one point, Filipino residents outnumbered Chinese residents in the area two to one. One bathhouse in the American Hotel was apparently for Visayans only. Rude! I visited the Carlos Bulosan Memorial Exhibit at the Eastern Hotel and the Wing Luke Museum, and learned about Bob Santos, the Filipino and Native American activist who fought to preserve the CID and expand affordable housing. That Filipino presence continues today through businesses including @hoodfamousbakeshop, @kiligseattle and @tabletopvillagellc, a Pokémon gaming center that was hopping on Thursday night. At the Asian-owned Mam’s Books (@mamsbookstore), Dev curates Manong’s Comic Corner (@manong.devs.comics ), featuring Filipino comics and graphic novels.
