Opinion:

If you gab w/ a pretentious snob, they'll tell ya that the Fringe is a big thrown together embarrassing mess. The sad part is that some of what they'll blab is true.

Does it feel good to pay 35 bucks to see something that's poorly produced and sucks? No. Not usually.

Can the Fringe be a mixed bag? Yes. Are you rolling the dice when you buy a ticket? Yes.

However, does NYC need the Fringe festival? Is it essential that NYC has a Fringe that's big and thriving?

The answer is a resounding foot stomping YES.

There's a side of New York City theater that's a big dirty thrown together process done by people who love it and would die for it. There really is no better display of this than the Fringe.

Mounting a Fringe show is hard. It's not for the faint of heart. Even with a festival, it's hard to get audiences. Getting reviewers to come is hard and takes luck. You might not get reviewed by even your cousin's blog that has a readership of just your cousin.

But when you're part of a festival it makes it easier to get audiences. It makes it easier to ride the wave of the festival instead of mounting something on your own. The festival is support and an infrastructure. It's a community.

You can take chances at the Fringe. It's a place to workshop. It's a platform where the biggest playwright or director in the world might waltz in and see your show.

The Fringe is a playground. It can be a mess, but it can also be brilliant. It can be the start of something genius.

Is it possible you're gonna see something at Fringe that'll change your life? A show you'll never forget?

Yes.

Here's another point, and it's a monumental one, I think. NYC Fringe was listed in The New York Times' "16 Off Broadway Plays and More to Ignite Your April". This is a very good sign.

Who cares what The NY Times says, you ask?

The 3 million people who read the Arts section.

The Times can see what's happening. Broadway is in trouble, and there's something exciting going on in the Off and Off-Off scene.

There's an Off and Off-Off Broadway revolution happening and a thriving Fringe must be part of it.

Long live the Fringe.

Omalolu “OJ” Fiki’s KILLING JANET, directed by Marissa Joyce Stamps, is now on stage through April 16 at the Chain Theatre as part of the 2026 New York City Fringe Festival.

Part stand-up, part cultural exorcism, KILLING JANET follows a Nigerian-American woman who decides —on live TV— to “kill” her missionary-given name and everything it represents. A razor-sharp solo comedy play about faith, assimilation, and the cost of compliance staged as a surreal game show where the audience helps decide the verdict.

PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE:
Saturday, April 4 @ 3:40pm
Thursday, April 9 @ 9:20pm
Saturday, April 11 @ 2:00pm
Thursday, April 16 @ 7:40pm

Tickets range from $20 to $30, and are available online at frigid.nyc/festivals/new-york-city-fringe.

Chain Theatre is located at 312 West 36th Street in the Garment District, not far from Penn Station.

We know it, we love it, and now we want you to know and love it too! It's CAPIZZI! The perfect pre-show dinner spot if you find yourself in Midtown. It's across from the Port Authority, but you honestly forget as soon as you walk in. It also somehow always feels like Christmas in there.
