Queercore in the Second City 22/08/2025, 17:30 The documentary Queercore in the Second City launches in just over a week and we cannot wait! The documentary explores Birmingham’s thriving Queer Hardcore (Queercore) scene, a subculture rooted in punk’s DIY ethos, community building, and queer resistance. Produced by Centrala and commissioned by the Royal Geographical Society (@rgs_ibg), the film captures a unique moment in time where music, identity, and place collide. After the screening, we’ll keep the celebrations going with an afterparty in collaboration with 0121Queercore (@0121queercore), with Leibniz (@leibnizband), Luxury Nan Smell (@luxurynansmell), Without Blood (@withoutbloodhc), and Blythe Blade (@blytheblade0121), from 19:30. Following the launch we have a new exhibition ‘Queercore in the Second City: Loud and Queer’, featuring photographs documenting some of the Queercore gigs by Ryley Morton (@ryleymorton_photography), from 23/08 - 14/09/2025. Morton’s work offers an intimate portrait of a community built from DIY ethics, political defiance, and the urgent need for spaces where queer people can be loud, visible, and unapologetically themselves. Where do the people at the Christmas market really come from, and will any security guards tell me what they actually spend their time doing? - Find out in this special edition of Decay Brum. - A happy holidays from myself, Joell Westwood behind the camera, and the good people of Bristol, Essex, and France.

THE GERMAN CHRISTMAS MARKET SERIES A strip from Centenary Square to The Bullring is converted to a hell of novelty mulled wine cups and overpriced burgers. The middleclass of the country flocks to gawk at the entirely artificial transformation of central Brum which, through the alchemy of capital, has been transformed from anti-space to wonderland. This alchemy relies on the displacement of Birmingham’s rough sleepers, implicitly in the street’s forcible transition, and explictly in the army of private security that patrols past the stalls. The state criminalises homelessness 12 months a year, and for an additional 3 months of the year BCC marginalises rough sleepers further through the very spacial fabric of the city. Don’t get a hot dog.

Decay Brum is a photographic catalogue of abandonment within Birmingham’s urban space and a place to understand the shifting sands of a built environment that many of us have little say in. - I am obsessed with the aesthetics of decay. I love a good bare concrete wall or peeling ceiling. Previously living in other areas of the UK, this fetishism was limited by a lack of material. I could walk past the handful of abandoned buildings in town, stand in awe at these monoliths to the past, and then move on. Since moving to Birmingham, this impulse to think of aesthetics and nothing more is a lot more difficult. - Birmingham, as it has been constructed by real estate capital, local, and central government, is a mess of a built environment. Huge byways divide and redline communities, ‘redevelopment’ has destroyed local haunts, and property developers continue to push people further and further from the city centre in the name of ‘investment’. Coming to better understand these forces, at the level of a city, an area, and an individual building, is my goal with Decay Brum. - With this in mind, while Decay Brum will catalogue the buildings left behind with their peeling paint and rotted roofs, the project will also capture the decay within communities brought by flats that no one can afford, public services for the select few, and the lifeless office park that our city centre threatens to become. - Decay starts at the head, but we all have to deal with the consequences. ~ Kimberly <3 Black and white photo of a person, camera raised to one eye, taking a photo in a dirty and chipped mirror.
