(500) Days of Summer is a 2009 romantic comedy-drama directed by Marc Webb that explores the difference between the idea of love and the reality of relationships. The film follows Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a hopeless romantic, and Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel), a woman who does not believe in lasting romantic connections.

Tom’s Perspective: Idealization and Fate Tom views Summer as his soulmate, projecting his fantasies onto her and ignoring her clear statements that she does not want a serious relationship. He romanticizes their interactions, believing in fate and that their connection is destined to last. His journey involves realizing that he fell in love with an imagined version of Summer rather than the actual person, teaching him that he cannot force someone to feel the same way he does.

Summer’s Perspective: Autonomy and Avoidance Summer is portrayed as honest and independent, explicitly stating she is not looking for commitment. She engages in a casual relationship with Tom because she enjoys his company but fears the constraints of traditional romance. Her character challenges the manic pixie dream girl trope, showing that her behavior stems from her own avoidant attachment style and past trauma regarding her parents' divorce, rather than a desire to manipulate Tom.

Core Themes and Conclusion The film argues that compatibility is more important than shared interests or infatuation. It suggests that heartbreak is a necessary step for personal growth, allowing Tom to rediscover his passion for architecture. The story concludes with Tom meeting a new woman named Autumn, symbolizing a move from idealized fantasy to a more grounded, realistic approach to love and life.
