Kior’s contribution to Kento Season 01 began with a memory she had almost forgotten: designing skins for the Winamp player as a teenager in the late 1990s. The South Korean visual artist and illustrator had recently moved from Microsoft Paint to Photoshop when she discovered the customized interfaces created and shared by people online. Making her own skins became an early creative outlet, even if, as she remembers, the results were sometimes clumsy. “Listening to music via the player wearing the skin I had designed was a new form of self-expression for me.” Her card, Skin of Memories, revisits that formative encounter with digital image-making and the joy of shaping technology around your own identity. Creating it allowed Kior to recover a memory that might otherwise have remained hidden in a distant corner of her mind.
