This summer, Magnum Foundation partnered with Storyline @storylinemedia for "One World, One Game" @1world1game, a storytelling project unfolding across New York City throughout the 2026 World Cup. We gave grants to five local photographers who documented how communities experienced the tournament and how New York became a gathering place for the world.

Destiny Mata @destiny.mata explored how fútbol became a way of claiming public space in Bushwick and Sunset Park. In Bed-Stuy, Kisha Bari @kishabari showed how September Cafe became a gathering place for the Cape Verdean community and the team’s growing fanbase. From Harlem, to Jackson Heights, to Brooklyn Bridge Park, Walaa Yassien @walaayassien documented “not only how people looked, but what they were feeling, what they were carrying with them, and what this moment meant to them.” Richard Louissaint @haitianrich documented vibrant fashion and collective excitement for Haiti in Bed-Stuy, and in Astoria, Bay Ridge, and Crown Heights, Sara Konradi @sarakonradi found points of connection across the SWANA diaspora.

@septemberbk became the hub for Cape Verde World Cup games. The 40ish people that came for that first match grew to hundreds, spilling into the street for the next three. Owner Sara Lopes, and her team brought the culture, serving traditional food, and attracting Cape Verdeans from as far away as Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vancouver. She even had to buy two extra TVs to accommodate the crowds.

A friend invited me to September to watch the first game with other Cape Verdeans she had met in a group chat. You could feel the excitement as we walked in.

Owner, Sara Lopes, was born in Cabo Verde, and grew up in Brockton, MA where there is a large Cape Verdean community. She came to New York 18 years ago to escape the community bubble. “For the longest time, I was running away… Because growing up, you’re like, oh, everybody knows your parents.”

When she heard Cabo Verde qualified for the World Cup, she considered buying tickets to a
game. Until friends started to ask if she was showing matches at her cafe. “It felt like a deep responsibility, almost,” she said.

Sara hired Cape Verdean chefs to serve traditional foods such as pastels, barrigada atun, carne gizado and fresquina. Her mom, Maria, came from Massachusetts to make the cachupa, a traditional stew. And Cape Verdean DJs played after the games, making it a true cultural experience.

From running away from her roots as a teen, Sara says that she’s now running towards it.
She’s already planning cultural collaborations and a block party for August 2nd. “I’m looking forward to just really staying connected to everyone that I met, and building on the community.”

For three weeks, I, and so many other football fans, became Cape Verdean. We will all remember Cabo Verde’s contribution to this year’s FIFA World Cup and the communities that welcomed us to cheer alongside them. And now, we all know where Cabo Verde is.
