A few weeks ago, I showed up in Hood River with no plans. I just wanted to spend some time by the water and take a few kiteboarding lessons.

I walked into Kite the Gorge, met Carlos and the team. I ended up spending time around the shop, photographing lessons, and taking lessons of my own.

In just a few days, it was easy to see why Kite the Gorge is such a special place. Beyond the world-class conditions in Hood River, it’s the community they’ve built over the last 20 years that stands out.

Super grateful for the opportunity to share a small part of their story and excited to be back soon!

🐾 What Does Adventure Cost? About the same as Saving a Dog’s Life.

Living in the Gorge means adventure is part of who we are. Mountain biking. Skiing. Windsurfing. We invest in the gear that fuels our passions—often without thinking twice.

But here’s a powerful comparison:

The average cost of caring for one dog at Hood River Adopt a Dog for a full year is roughly the same as the gear we buy for our hobbies.

We are the only shelter in Hood River county, and +80% funded by donations.

$2,000–$3,000 can cover a dog’s entire year of care—and give them a second chance at life.

🐾 We’re not asking you to give up adventure.
We’re asking you to share it 🐾

A River Runs Through Where The Wind Blows!

The cold moist Pacific in the West, the hot dry continental semi-arid desert in the East, creates the perfect pressure gradient across the Cascades for wind flow. This is enabled by the only near sea level pathway across the Cascades, i.e. the constriction of the Columbia River Gorge, creating the perfect wind in the summer months at Hood River.

Wells Island / Spring Creek Fish Hatchery location on the Columbia River. Great wind location on the river.

It’s coming to the end of season two for me and I’m totally hooked. Lots of struggling and swearing to get to this point, but wow, it was totally worth the effort. It’s so much fun. It’s hard to describe it, you really have to feel it for yourself! Anyone else learn this summer?

Some clips from an up and down session the other day. This summer has been pretty hard for me. Winging has kept me sane when I’ve needed it most. I’ve been going every chance I get. I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t tried. Gotta put in the work, but when you get there it’s so fun! There’s still time to learn this year. Come take lesson!
