A woman I never met is the reason I do every bit of volunteer work I do.
She passed away yesterday. 💔

I’m not much of a country music fan, or specifically a fan of Dolly Parton’s music.

(Except for the duet she sang with Kenny Rogers, “Islands in the Stream,” which I used to sing with my bestie at the top of our lungs, often after arriving home from a night out... much to the chagrin of her brother who worked weekends at a bakery and had to be up before the sun.)

So it isn’t the songs that drew me to her. It’s who she was.

I learned about her incredible generosity when I got involved with the Chatham-Kent Dolly Parton Imagination Library. 📚

She could’ve died a billionaire. Instead, she chose to give so much of it away.

I think that’s because she started out with so little. She knew what it felt like to go without, and she never forgot it.

She understood why people need charity, especially children.

That’s what makes me a humongous fan. Not the rhinestones or the songs, but the giving. 💛

So thanks, Dolly. For showing the rest of us what it can look like when you remember where you came from.

I’ll keep trying to do my small part right here at home.

What an amazing evening tonight as the Kiwanis Club of Chatham-Kent hosted their 80th Annual Grand Concert as part of the beloved Kiwanis Music Festival. As a proud Kiwanis Music Festival alumna it was an honour to be asked to emcee the event tonight in front of a wonderful crowd at the Kiwanis Theatre. The talent of the young performers on stage was truly amazing. I was thrilled to be part of it. Thank you Kiwanians for your continued dedication to the arts in our community. It matters! 🎶

Council conversations: happy to join members of the Kiwanis Club of Chatham-Kent for the flag-raising to mark the beginning of the Kiwanis Music Festival. This year marks 80 years of the festival - wow! I participated in the festival for many years when I was younger so it was a lovely full circle moment to celebrate this milestone. The arts are foundational for a healthy and vibrant community- thank you CK Kiwanians for volunteering your time so generously to this wonderful event! 🎶

💛 Happy International Volunteer Day!

Today, I’m celebrating volunteers.

The people who quietly show up and lend a hand.

Because they make our community a little lighter, a little brighter, and a whole lot stronger!

From checking in on a neighbour to supporting local programs, your kindness doesn’t go unnoticed.

Chatham-Kent is better because of you. Thank you for everything you do.

I volunteer for a few different charities. Some are a big commitment, others require much less of me.

So, if you’re looking for somewhere to volunteer feel free to reach out to me. I bet I know a place that’ll fit your needs!

Tag a volunteer you want to celebrate today! 🙌
