I’ve been a member of @adpanetwork — first as a member of We Believe in Second Chances, then as an individual for a bit (I think), now as a member of @transformjustice.sg — for more than a decade. It’s probably closer to 15 years. But it was only in 2023 that I ran for and was elected to ADPAN’s exco and got much more involved in ADPAN activities and interactions with other members.

Through this experience, and especially after the ADPAN regional conference that concluded this weekend, I’ve found another community and family outside the one I have in Singapore.

Fighting for abolition in a stubbornly retentionist authoritarian state is not easy work. But it doesn’t have to be lonely work. At home, I’m lucky to have the people who make up TJC (and more); abroad, I’m blessed for everyone working to build and strengthen ADPAN.

I first met some of my fellow ADPAN EC members way back when I was just a baby activist, wide-eyed with no idea what to do and how to do it. I’m proud we’re able to work together now, and that these more experienced activists have so generously and so lovingly made space for me over the years, so we can work towards a common goal as equals.

Over the past few days I’ve been so happy to spend time with and learn from people like @kgomezdumpit, @ngeowchowying, sarakowal_, @pesky.pest, @sherrierd, @ambikasat, @eli.za.beth.wood, @tomtemprosa, @jantheresa and more! And I’m proud to have represented Singapore and TJC alongside @elijahtaypeng, who quickly impressed everyone and turned into one of our conference stars 🤩✊🏼

Once we come down from the high of one another’s company we will once again feel the weight of the work we do — the struggle, the frustration, the heartache and heartbreak. But gatherings like this remind me that there are so many people across the region and around the world who are in this fight too. And while we might live in different contexts, employ different strategies or make different choices, we can come together and be strong together.

謝謝大家陪我玩我在新加坡永遠都不會玩的扭蛋，吃我在新加坡通常吃不到的臭豆腐！

Thank you for bringing me around the gachapon (which I never play with in Singapore) and eating stinky tofu (which I rarely get to eat in Singapore) with me.

I was reading @kixes 's weekly newsletter We, The Citizens and these numbers struck a chord.

If you believe that Singapore is a peaceful, progressive country - think again.

It enacts violence on groups of people we don't often think about, in ways that are irreparable and in ways where there's no going back -- the death penalty.

There's no proof that the death penalty is an effective deterrent. We also know that these people who have been executed, who are on death row are more often than not merely mules, carriers, and none of this affects anybody in the actual drug trade. It only impacts and leaves irreparable scars on parents, siblings, communities.

There is a better way.
Abolish the death penalty.
Stop the violence. Stop the killing.
Abolish the death penalty.

Gratitude to @kixes @learningfromthemargins @transformjustice.sg and others

Image ID: White text on a black background reads: Eight execution notices issued in 2022. Four already hanged. Over 60 people on death row, over 40 with their legal avenues exhausted. Between 2017 and today, there have been 29 executions. Between 2010 and today, there have been 43 executions. Between 1991 and today, almost 500 people have been executed by the Singapore state, most of them for drugs. When will it end?

On 24 June 2022 (Friday), Rocky Howe and Kirsten Han were questioned by the police for three hours. The investigation had to do with alleged 'illegal assemblies' outside Changi Prison in March: once when they sat outside Changi Prison with tea lights hours before Abdul Kahar bin Othman was hanged, another time when they took photos with electric candles and a sign reading "End Oppression Not Life" outside the prison two nights before Nagaenthran K Dharmalingam was hanged.

During the interrogation, police officers took issue with the T-shirts that the two were wearing. Because both shirts had anti-death penalty slogans on them, the police claimed that, by walking from the market across the street to the police station, Kirsten and Rocky had constitued an "illegal procession". Their shirts were confiscated.

The police also demanded that Kirsten hand over passwords for her social media accounts, apparently so that they could "preserve evidence". She refused, citing concerns over privacy and digital security.

What happened to Rocky and Kirsten has triggered responses of outrage, but also fear and a sense of helplessness. In this message, they - and all of us who stand with them - urge people not to be paralysed by the antics of authoritarian rule, but to continue building solidarity and working towards a better, fairer Singapore.

Huh? Walking with an anti-death penalty T-shirt is considered a procession?

TW: Death Penalty.

Capital Punishment is still a legal penalty in Singapore and the recent and soon-to-come executions are due to drug related offences.

Instead of interrogating what have led to people using or “trafficking” drugs, we are killing people who are victims of greater systemic issues. This doesn’t prevent drug related issues from continuing and it doesn’t help people.

Interrogate systemic issues such as colonialism, racism, ableism, and capitalism when thinking about what leads someone to risk their life for drugs or to “traffic” drugs.

Consider why majority of the people on death row are largely Malay, Indian, and other ethnic minorities.

Consider why there are people on death row who are disabled in some way.

Consider colonialism and when Capital Punishment was introduced in Singapore.

Consider the lack of accessible mental health services and the stigma of seeking mental health support.

#AbolishDeathPenalty because cruelty and violence helps no one, doesn’t tackle the root of any issue, and causes more harm.

There will be a vigil for Nagaenthran and Datchinamurthy at Hong Lim Park on 25 Apr, 7-10pm. Details are in the next slides.

On the 23rd of February 2022, Rosman bin Abdullah was scheduled to be hanged for his drug trafficking offences, despite the fact that he had assisted authorities to the best of his abilities.

ADPAN has curated an infographic to break down why this is problematic - do feel free to share this around with your circles!

Singapore, we urge you to #SaveRosman and #StopTheExecution

Spread the Word 📣📣 Make some Noise 📣📣 Let’s do our part in creating awareness for Rosman, and for everyone else on death row facing similar issues.

Keep making noise - it allows for more time to raise awareness about the cases, to campaign for the abolishment of the death penalty, and for lawyers to prepare their cases.

I'm furious and sad that #jolovanwham is found guilty of illegal assembly and #tituslow is charged with transmitting obscene materials. You can read Kirsten Han's commentary in we, the citizens. I'm a poet, and so I respond with a poem:

Now and then someone would comment on how
Brazen my poems are, or how clinical.
Since one's words must reflect one's character,
I must be shameless and want true emotion.

Like Titus Low, who bares all on OnlyFans,
A sooty-haired Narcissus with tattoo sleeves,
In words I suck and fuck, am fucked and sucked,
Because poetry protects me like a paywall,

Behind which I strip me down to perform.
In truth, I'm older, like Jolovan Wham,
Who snaps himself in front of the courts,

Holding a sign protesting the clampdown
On speech: poetry as protest, yes, yes, yes,
And prophecy: freed, love will come to all.*
