🌈Post Description: Have you ever read a book that feels less like a story and more like a vibrant, breathing ecosystem? 🌿✨

I just finished *Song of Hummingbird Highway* by K. M. Cookie, and I am still trying to catch my breath. This journey takes us from the familiar hum of the Detroit suburbs all the way to the lush, sacred landscapes of Belize. Terri follows her musician boyfriend down south for a funeral, but a near-death experience quickly spirals into something much deeper. When her son mysteriously vanishes, Terri has to track him down through ancient folklore, hidden cenotes, and rhythmic beats, facing uncomfortable truths about her marriage, her faith, and her own inner fears along the way.

The themes here are so rich—exploring everything from Garifuna drums and Mayan cosmology to a fascinating blend of Christian values and Daoist wisdom. K. M. Cookie’s writing style is lyrical, atmospheric, and deeply immersive, making you feel the tropical humidity and hear the music pulsing through the pages. What makes this book truly unique is how seamlessly it weaves magical realism with raw, messy human emotion.

Reading this felt deeply personal. Terri isn’t a flawless heroine; she has plenty of bravado and struggles with her self-esteem, which made her desperation and fierce maternal love hit so close to home. I found myself tearing up more than once watching her confront her past wounds.

If I have one small critique, the pacing in the middle third dips just a bit as the narrative dense-packs a lot of spiritual lore all at once, which required me to slow down and really pay attention. But honestly, it’s a tiny hurdle in an otherwise unforgettable read.

5/5 ⭐
