Event Review: ‘Spermageddon – Thirty minutes to save humanity’.
Dr Erin Williams (Lecturer in Reproductive Anatomy and Physiology) reflects on Professor Rod Mitchell’s latest stand up comedy show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, dedicated to male fertility. Dr Williams notes that the show touched upon topics like declining male fertility; potential factors impacting male fertility; and in-vitro derived sperm cells. Dr Williams adds that Professor Mitchell ‘has a real knack for finding the humour in difficult topics without losing sight of the people living with these issues; his jokes are what carry serious messages to audiences who may otherwise never hear them’.

We’ve never had more access to fertility information.

But more information doesn’t always mean better information.

Jonathan Ramsay makes an important point about the rise of AI and online information:

An opinion can be repeated so many times that it starts to look like evidence.

And in areas of male fertility where the research is still developing, that can be a real problem.

The answer isn’t to stop asking questions.

It’s to get better at asking: What does the evidence actually say?

What if we’re asking the wrong question when fertility treatment fails?

When should you look beyond the standard semen analysis?

We’ve wanted Jonathan Ramsay on The Male Fertility Podcast for YEARS…

And we finally made it happen. 🔥

And honestly, this conversation did not disappoint.

One of the big topics we got into was something Jonathan noticed after seeing hundreds of men with fertility difficulties:

Some men had a normal or near-normal semen analysis, but were still struggling to conceive.

So what was going on?

That question led Jonathan to look beyond the traditional semen analysis and into sperm DNA fragmentation.

But this conversation isn’t about telling you that DNA fragmentation is the answer to everything.

Far from it.

The testing is complicated. Different tests measure different things, the evidence is still developing, and the results need to be considered alongside the wider fertility picture.

Which brings us to a question I think is really important:

Is the semen analysis normal?

Or…

Does the whole picture make sense?
