“You can always, always give something. Even if it is only kindness.”
—Anne Frank

Our dear People, our dear Bagginses and Boffins,
and our dear Tooks and Brandybucks,

It's been far too short a time to spend among such excellent and admirable hobbits, but we are wrapping up #hopeisaverb for now.

Because of your kindness and generosity, we have been able to raise $1,460 US for our incredible #hopeisaverb causes over the past two months.

We are so grateful to everybody who has liked, commented on, or shared a post; to everyone who posted a #hopestack ; to the very generous people who actually put their hands into their pockets and made a donation; and most especially to the amazing artists and crafters who contributed their time and skill to make such fantastic giveaway prizes. We really are lucky to have such friends in this world.

“The world is held together, really it is held together, by the love and the passion of a very few people.”
—James Baldwin

And we have not yet given away all of the wonderful prizes! But every season must end, else it can never come around again.

Hope will be back. In fact, it isn't going anywhere.

The links are still in our bios, and sadly, the need isn't going away. We thought for now, we would leave you with some details about these causes. If you are able to give anything at all, then I promise you, you will find that doing something feels a lot better than doing nothing.

Be the light you want to see in the world.

#hopeisaverb
Hope and action for our planet is as vital as hope for humanity, as the two are irrefutably intertwined (and those who argue otherwise are part of the problem). These books are by people who respect the wonder of nature and speak to our responsibility as stewards.

We love it when the internet gets all hopeful. Thank you so much to everybody who posted, shared and donated last week. We’ve raised an amazing $235 for the fantastic causes listed in our bios, and we’ll be matching all of that.

Our week one winner @pagesoftheages will be taking home the gorgeous hand-knitted book-purse by the amazing @angel_ontheother , as well as one of our super-cute hope-is-a-verb bracelets by @apaperhaven and a $25 book voucher.

We look forward to seeing some more of your lovely hope stacks this week. Help us show the world that hope is a verb.

What is #hopeisaverb
Incredible artists and creators from across the bookstagram community and beyond have come together to create and donate unique giveaway prizes. Every week we’ll pick one lucky winner from our #hopeisaverb tombola.
Our week two prize will be this beautifully detailed handmade paper diorama by the amazing @lyn.books_and_paper.art , together with a bracelet and a $25 book voucher to the online store of your choice.
Draw will take place Saturday 23rd May. And don’t worry if you don’t win, your ticket/s stay in the tombola for the next week and so on, for as long as we have prizes.
To get into that tombola:
1. Make any post you like, featuring any book or stack of books that give you hope. Use the hashtag #hopeisaverb and tag @dan.devours.words & @kieranjanebooks - 1 ticket
or 2. Donate to any of the #hopeisaverb causes linked in bios of @dan.devours.words & @kieranjanebooks . Send a confirmation screenshot to @dan.devours.words - 2 tickets per $5 donated

Also note, all donations will be donation-matched by Kieran and Dan up to the first $1,500. What are you waiting for? Do good. Get good. Grow hope.

Friends, we know the world feels heavy right now. So swollen with lies, so laden with hate. It feels like you could never move it. Not even a little.

But we believe this community can make a difference. We’ve seen it happen. Together, we can move the world, bit by bit. And we know that tiny difference means all the world to somebody.

Incredible artists and creators from across the bookstagram community and beyond have come together to create and donate unique giveaway prizes. Every week for as long as we have prizes to give away, we’ll pick one name at random from our #hopeisaverb tombola, and the lucky winner will receive one of these amazing prizes and a $25 book token.

Week One’s prize will be a gorgeous watermelon book-purse handmade by the amazing @angel_ontheother, together with one of our super cute handmade hope-is-a-verb bracelets by @apaperhaven and a $25 book voucher to the online bookstore of your choice.

Drawing will take place Saturday 16th May and winner will be announced shortly after. And don’t worry if you don’t win, your ticket/s stay in the tombola for the next week and so on, for as long as the giveaway runs.

We’ve called this campaign #hopeisaverb, so here’s the bit where you do something. To get into that tombola:

1. Make any post you like, featuring any book or stack of books that give you hope. Use the hashtag #hopeisaverb and tag @dan.devours.words & @kieranjanebooks - 1 ticket

2. Donate to any of the #hopeisaverb causes linked in bios of @dan.devours.words & @kieranjanebooks. Send a confirmation screenshot to @dan.devours.words - 2 tickets per $5 donated

ALSO! - all donations will be donation-matched by Kieran and Dan up to the first $1,500. So what are you waiting for? [matched donation funds will be distributed evenly across all listed causes]

🎊the #pathwayssweater is available now! The link to get it is in my bio. There’s 10% off all my patterns this week (5/2-5/9) to celebrate the launch 💗

I am so thrilled with how this pattern turned out and so grateful to my testers, my tech editor @fiber.thing, @indiigo.photography for photography, and @explorerknits for adding a sample of this sweater to her Butterchrome collection (which is still open for preorder!) My heart feels so full when I think about all the support that this community offers me 🥹

I’m so happy to have this elevated-cozy sweater pattern in your hands and absolutely cannot wait to see all the different versions🌈

A massive thank you to everybody who posted a #bookstackforsudan. Thanks to your bookstacks, $200 has been donated to the Sudanese American Physician’s Association, working on the ground throughout the country. But even more importantly, your posts have helped raise visibility for a conflict Western media would rather we ignore.

Friends, in the time we ran this initiative, the estimates of the scale of the massacre at El Fasher have been revised. At least 60,000 bright souls lost their lives in that city, with up to 150,000 still unaccounted for. There are no words to describe the scale of this grief. The people of that city were dreamers, poets, readers, musicians, teachers, doctors and delivery drivers and deli workers. Those remaining must abandon their dreams or see them torn apart with their loved ones. For the sake of those lost and those who deserve to wish again, we all must do so much better.

We don’t want this campaign to be over. We don’t want to let the hopes of the Sudanese people dwindle and fail, just as their destruction fades from our screens and our feeds. And we know many of you don’t want that either.

So next up: did somebody say read-along for Sudan? We’ve listed 12 Sudanese reading suggestions in the comments - pop a heart on every book you’d like to read!

Be the light,
Kieran and Dan
