Relationship status: it’s complicated. There’s a dance between the polarities of feminine and masculine (or yin and yang) that exists in each of us. Most of us have more of one than the other, and that isn’t really dictated by our biological gender. So it’s quite possible to be, for example, a straight man with a very strong feminine essence. I’ve started to understand gender, energetic polarity and sexuality as more like a kind of continuum rather than a black and white thing. We all exist on this series of sliding scales rather than simply in one of the three boxes western society has designated for us: male, female or other. According to David Deida, we’ll pretty much be attracted to our energetic opposites. And that can work INSIDE the relationship, but with the modern shifting of gender roles in society suddenly you find couples where the female partner has to function in a work environment, or through single parenting, in a much more dominant masculine role than is her natural position. So now we have this beautiful dance of opposite polarities being overlayed with layers of social pressure, societally programmed expectations and economic realities that emasculate men, force women to take on different roles than their disposition dictates and marginalized people who struggle to fit. So what’s the solution? How do we find the balance between Shiva and Shakti? I’m increasingly of the opinion that we can’t. But what we can do is ‘ride the wave’. Because, like everything in the universe, we are shifting and changing all the time. And we need to communicate. There’s a line in the Nina Simone song ‘In the Dark’ where she says to her lover, ‘....don’t be psychic ‘cause you’ll blow it!’ We need to ACTUALLY TALK about what’s going on inside and what our needs are. My very gifted friend, @michaeldale81 , runs a courses just on the process of unpicking what we do to get our needs met, what our ‘shadow’ needs are that drive our behavior and how we can relate better through understanding our own, and others’ needs. So we come back to Responsibility and Self-Enquiry. And as every teacher in the history of spiritual development will tell you: Give more than you receive!
