🍖 Korean fine dining
💸 $230/pp Chef’s Table menu
🌟 10/10

Visited KOBO last year for their “Korean BBQ Rhapsody” episode, and it’s still one of the most memorable meals I’ve had. The charcoal-grilled oyster was smoky and luscious, the seafood tartlet and charred cucumber snack were playful and refined, and the beef tartare was an absolute highlight. The mains — pork jowl with ssamjang, smoky beef rib with housemade kimchi — celebrated Korean BBQ traditions with a modern, elegant twist. Ended with a burnt rice ice cream that was nostalgic and surprisingly light. A soulful, intimate dining experience that’s hard to beat. Highly recommend if you’re into Korean flavours elevated to fine dining! ✨⭐️🍷🍶

📍- Kobo, Sydney

My first ever Korean Omakase at Kobo in Sydney, by Chef Jacob Lee. The menu is themed and changed every few weeks with what they called “episodes”. We visited for episode 10 - “Anju” - Korean Drinking and Food Culture.

We started with a welcome drink—moju, makgeolli boiled w/ ginger and Korean pear—quickly followed by a selection of snacks: 1) corn cheese cracker w/ parmesan, 2) buckwheat pancake tart w/ paradise prawn tartare, 3) potato pancake w/ fried seaweed, 4) yukhwe bibimbap, and 5) twister bread. The first four snacks were inspired by popular Korean drinking dishes or what Chef Lee likes to order, showcasing his modern interpretation of them. The twister bread, as simple as it looks, was our favourite dish. Made with makgeolli and served warm with crème fraîche, cinnamon, and honey—it was fresh, warm, and just delicious.

For entrées, we started with a tuna tartare tart w/ caviar and a tofu & kimchi salad. In Korea, tofu and kimchi are often considered “safe choices” or staple dishes, similar to how salads like burrata and cherry tomato are viewed in Western cuisine. This was a fresh take on a classic tofu kimchi salad. We then cleansed our palates with a peach white kimchi.

For pre-mains, we had a crab doenjang soup featuring Moreton Bay bug (I think) w/ radish in a bubbly, flavourful broth, and a spicy seafood soup made with toothfish and pasta, topped with a rich prawn purée.

The main dish was wagyu w/ sticky rice, prepared with a risotto-like texture that instantly reminded me of the risotto from Culinary Class Wars. This dish was a deconstructed take on doenjang iron pot rice. I really enjoyed these main dishes—everything was executed well!

For desserts, we had hwachae—a Korean fruit punch w/ fresh fruits, ice cream, and blood orange milk foam—followed by a selection of petit fours.

Overall, it was a very enjoyable and fun Korean Omakase experience. But it looks like Kobo has permanently closed its doors :(

@kobo_syd is an omakase in Sydney that offers a unique take on Korean food with a different concept changing every couple months 🇰🇷

I tried Ep 10. Anju which is a 12 course degustation inspired by Korean tapas paired with alcohol. Curated by chef @sunny0_0527 he shares his experiences with Korean drinking cultures and each dish having a special story behind it ✨🍶

My favourites were the twisted donut w yuzu butter, beef tartare bibimbap and the corn cheese which all had a creative twist on Korean flavours 🌽

The chefs also cook and plate everything in front of you which was so fun to watch. Truly a unique dining experience and I cannot wait to go back for their next episode!

Fancy Korean Omakase - Korean BBQ Inspired 🥩✨

What. An. Experience — guaranteed to be the boujee-est KBBQ experience that I’ve ever had 🥹 went to @kobo_syd and had SUCH an amazing omakase experience, I honestly think I have a new-found appreciation for Korean Fine Dining 🫶🏼

What I loved about this meal (and honestly any good meal) is the people who are behind the menu — it really reflects their passion for food and the creativity does not stop 🥹 I loved how thoughtful every course was and how it reflected Korean culture and their way of enjoying KBBQ, it’s almost (and really is) story telling. I really enjoyed this one and rate highly!

Featured 📸 — Ep 9. KBBQ

🦪 Oyster Emulsion, Pork Jowl
🦐 Seafood Pancake
🥩 Beef Tartare

🥒 Charred Cucumber w/ Doenjang Tahini
🤍 Rice Wine Lee Bao w/ Dashima Butter

🐷 Kurobuta Pork Shoulder, Gochujang Pork Belly
🥩 Wagyu Deckle, Beef Rib
🍲 Soybean Paste, Tofu

🍦 Burnt Rice Cracker Icecream
 🍐 Pear Tea, Injeolmi Chocolate

Some of my highlights has got to be the Oyster starter — this one was oyster, topped with pork jowl and was honestly such an umami bomb. So much flavour and texture going on, it was the first course and definitely started it right! ☺️

I LOVEEED (and am still thinking about) the entree — the bao made for makgeolli was pure genius and was the fluffiest thing ever! the dashima butter is one of the best butters I’ve had oh my goodness - amazing with the bao! The doenjang tahini was strong but very flavourful.

Out of the meats, I loved the Pork Shoulder and Beef Rib. Honestly melt in your mouth consistency and I loved how they served it with different condiments and sauces for each!

We finished with a burnt rice cracker icecream which was SO good (big icecream gal and this got my tick of approval) ending with a pear tea & injeolmi chocolate 🤎

Highly recommend if you’re after something different to the usual! ☺️ they rotate menu every few months and they have a new one that just started now. 🫶🏼 (and thank you @evelineeats for showing me this gem!!)
