Talking, pouring & drinking wine @smaragdwines 🍾🍇

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Part 1 🤩 Blind tasting is one of the most challenging and fun things you can do with a glass of champagne.

We challenged a group of sommeliers, winemakers and importers to taste the same two champagnes blind. They had to guess grape variety, vintage and dosage. Getting it right is hard, even for the pros, with so many variables at play.

Which makes it even better that so many people took on the challenge! Thank you to everyone who joined. Right or wrong? It really does not matter, it is all about pushing your palate and having a great time doing it.

Stay tuned for Part 2 🍾

Bodega Chacra – 2025 Mainqué Chardonnay 🇦🇷

Patagonia is emerging as one of Argentina’s most exciting regions for Chardonnay, and Bodega Chacra (@bodegachacra) is at the forefront. Created through the collaboration between Piero Incisa della Rocchetta and Burgundy’s legendary Jean-Marc Roulot, Mainqué combines Burgundian finesse with a distinctly Patagonian identity.

🌟 The Beauty of Balance

The 2025 Mainqué opens with expressive aromas of white peach, ripe citrus and fresh orchard fruit, complemented by delicate floral notes, toasted almond and a touch of flint. On the palate, generous fruit meets vibrant acidity, with a fine chalky texture and refreshing saline minerality. Elegant, precise and beautifully balanced, this is Chardonnay that combines immediate pleasure with genuine sophistication.

🍇 Burgundian Expertise, Patagonian Identity

Founded by Piero Incisa della Rocchetta, whose family is behind Tuscany’s iconic Sassicaia, Bodega Chacra has become one of Argentina’s most exciting producers. Its collaboration with Jean-Marc Roulot brings Burgundian expertise to Patagonia, allowing the region’s distinctive terroir to take centre stage.

📍 The Character of Río Negro

Sourced from five vineyard parcels in Patagonia’s Alto Valle del Río Negro, Mainqué reflects a landscape of ancient alluvial soils, abundant sunshine and cool nights. These conditions encourage expressive fruit while preserving the freshness and natural acidity that define Chacra’s white wines.

⏳ Precision with a Generous Side

Mainqué has the generosity to draw you in, the freshness to hold your attention and the precision to demonstrate what Patagonia can bring to Chardonnay. Already beautifully approachable, it possesses the structure to develop further complexity over the coming years.

🏅 92-point DWA Score

Have you discovered Patagonia’s Chardonnays yet, or do you still associate the region primarily with Pinot Noir?

A bit shy nose at first
Touch of low intervention feel not in a bad way
Yeasty fresh flinty spicy sharpness
Mega sexy and lush midpalete
Heavenly creamy velvety mid, just lovely 😍
Typical 2020 richness with just the perfect balance in acidity, a touch sweet though
That energetic spicy punch works well in total balance
Very enjoyable wine

Nutty and deep aroma
A tad ripe and a bit maison style in feel
A bit heavy in the nose
But still lovely acidity
It’s quite extraordinary this chalky fresh expression she gets in these 100% #pinotnoir champagnes
A sugary rich little sweetness to it
A typical 2008 medium plus acidity intensity
Personally not blown away and for me not worth all the hype marketprices.

Now on the wine list at Lobby Fizeaustraat, we’ve got the 8th vintage of this legendary blend from one of South Africa’s most respected producers, The Sadie Family. This bottle is a prime example of why we love what we do. #bringthegangsterback
