POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

All the real ones were out for a grimy Grindhouse evening in the @cinematicvoid for DOCTOR BUTCHER, M.D. If you weren’t there sorry, it’s cuz you’re a poser. That’s the verdict from on high, so you gotta turn in your badge and your gun and your Letterboxd account now.

@monsterpaloozaofficial is our last con with @fangoria until next year at @creepiecon and there is nothing quite like working with my best friend, booth wife, and partner in crime @kolleenbee - I had so much fun this weekend meeting rockstar icons and talking about my favorite horror movies of the year. Special shoutout to all the cool humans who visited us to give us big hugs and sweet treats. You made the weekend so wonderful and great. Doing these cons and getting to meet fans of the magazine and introducing new would-be fans to subscriptions is part of why I love what I do! We are bridging the community to keep physical media tangible and alive and it elates me every time someone picks up a magazine. Read! Watch movies! Happy spooky season - thank you for letting me be a big part of yours. 🎃❤️

September passed swiftly, an LA trip bumping up against visitors for Oktoberfest season. It was a month of conversations, adventures and memories with people I love, and after so much of this year was spent in solitude – working long, late hours in a quiet house while Matt was on fortnightly business trips – the fact that I’ve spent the past several weeks hoarse from gabbing too much is kind of a miracle.

I fretted heading into LA for the Fango Compendium book party. There were so many particulars to manage, and being the focus of attention for an event always gives me butterflies. I was a wreck before my own wedding for the same reason! I already did my thank-you post for the army of folks who helped pull off this party seamlessly, and I’m most grateful for the many hilarious, engrossing, meaningful conversations I had on this trip, all of which managed to make me forget I was there to work. I felt absolutely euphoric with friendship the entire time I was there, and then, almost as an afterthought, the party was a success. Isn’t that cool?

Two days after returning to Germany, Mandy and Rachel flew in for a long-planned Oktoberfest trip. It was as perfect as we’d first dreamed of back in college, and the big fest day rested cozily amid many couch hangs, patio hangs, biergarten hangs. The four of us have all been neighbors and/or roommates, but what we really are is family, with all the ease and goofiness and comfortable vulnerability that entails.

Two days after they left, Dad arrived for his second annual Oktoberfest! This marked the first year Matt and I went to Oktoberfest twice, and it’s safe to say we’ve got it down pat. We show up early, leave early, and squeeze in a lot of food, fun and Festbier while avoiding the crowds. We love hosting Dad - we all operate at the same tempo, and he fits right into our lives here. Grill-outs, long walks, nights cracking up in the living room as we swap stories or watch Josh Johnson comedy all feel both normal and special with Dad.

He’s since headed home, and tomorrow I head back to US for another work trip bolstered by time with loved ones. Looks like I’ll be hoarse a while longer, and I feel awfully lucky for it.

Saturday October 3rd, 2026.

Another @newbeverly Annual Horror Show in the books. I don’t typically show up super early for screenings, with the exception of this one because our crew always rolls deep and it’s the only way to get seats together (and seats that don’t suck) for the twelve hours of surprise horror cinema lurking in the theater. So because I am an insane person, I was in line at 7:15 AM on the day, and surprisingly managed to not fall asleep for more than a few seconds here and there throughout the whole day.

Brian and Phil programmed a great line-up with some fun trailers (we finally got Ghoulies on the screen, even if it was just a trailer! A step in the right direction for Ghoulies Go To College to find its way into the line-up, some day!), and a fun little prize bag for everyone who made it through the entire marathon.

All films were secret until they hit the screen, with the curated pre-shows serving up clues in their trailers. Line-up was as follows

1. The Kindred
2. The Black Sleep
3. Bloodeaters
4. Highway To Hell
5. Necropolis
6. Vacancy

I’d heard of all but 2 and 3, and had seen zero of these, and in a touch of inspired genius the date October 3rd actually gets said out loud in The Black Sleep. It was between Kindred, Highway To Hell, and Vacancy for my favorite, and this might have been the best opener/closer year I can remember since I started going to these (although Nightmare Beach/Sorority Row in ‘22 was another perfect bookend year).

This is one of my favorite annual traditions and it’s always a treat to spend it with some of my absolute favorite people, sitting in the dark with horror movies and surviving on too many Cokes and hot dogs. Great way to kick off October strong, and can’t wait to do this all again next year!
