Behind the scenes at the Boone County Courthouse: This morning, Professor Elizabeth Frogge took TV reporting students out of the classroom and into the courtroom to learn exactly what it takes to cover real-world trials.

The J-School Tigers got a look at the physical layout of a courtroom and a masterclass in courtroom etiquette from Frogge and Lana Brooks, the deputy court administrator for the 13th Judicial Circuit.

"You’re the face for our community," Brooks told the students, sharing essential dos and don'ts for journalists:

— Never point cameras at the jury or at notes on attorneys' tables.
— Arrive early to clear security lines and give yourself time to set up.
— No recording allowed in the hallways.
— Visit a trial as a spectator first to get the lay of the land.

Bonus tips from Frogge: bring headphones and put mobile phones on silent.

Students even got to sit in the jury box, step inside the jury deliberation room, and see the views from the witness seat and the judge’s bench.

For senior Campbell Kessler, the hands-on experience changed her perspective. She described the trip as "very in-depth, detail-oriented," adding that she now understands the courtroom dynamics from all angles. “I’m really excited to cover a story here at the courthouse,” she said.

Frogge serves as the assistant news director at @komunews, mid-Missouri's NBC affiliate. She also takes students on tours of the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City, where the Missouri School of Journalism operates its Statehouse Reporting Program for news outlets statewide.

(Why are there no photos from today's tour? Members of the general public are not allowed to bring mobile phones, smart watches and recording devices into the Boone County Courthouse.)

THIS WEEK IN MID MISSOURI: 🗞️🚨 A mobile home park in Moberly is on its 6th day without water.

“If it doesn’t get resolved, my only option is to sell my home. And that makes it a little difficult, because even if I sell it, I don’t really have a place to go” Pepin said in an interview with @komunews today.

Riley’s Mobile Home Park and businesses beside it have gone six days without running water, forcing owners to stay in hotels while residents struggle to shower, wash clothes and complete everyday tasks.

A privately owned wastewater pump station in the area failed around Oct. 8, causing raw sewage to back up into the park’s sewer system and overflow onto the ground.

A letter sent to residents from park management said they began contacting plumbing professionals after the city identified the issue. They also said they would temporarily suspend rent payment requirements for affected residents until water service is restored.
