Slow Dance opens at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago on Saturday, September 12

Curated by Jadine Collingwood @jadine.collingwood Pamela Alper Associate Curator, with Korina Hernandez @korinavh Curatorial Assistant, Slow Dance features six artists who use performance to reclaim forms of slowness that resist the contemporary demand to constantly perform, whether in the public sphere, on social media, or in the workplace. Featuring works by Brendan Fernandes, Gordon Hall, Geumhyung Jeong, Carolyn Lazard, Melanie McLain, and Cally Spooner, this multidisciplinary exhibition includes painting, sculpture, video, with in-gallery performance activations throughout the run of the show.

In-gallery performances will take place throughout the opening day on Saturday September 12. Gordon Hall, Hands and Knees, will be performed between 11:15 and 12:15 and between 2:15 and 3:15. Subsequent performances of Hands and Knees will take place in February and March of 2027, with the sculptures on view throughout the run of the show.

when i was 10 yrs old i was at a market in Hong Kong with my dad, where we saw a older man humming to himself while he strolled through the market. Hands clasped behind his back, looking at the sky and the people around him. He didn’t seem rushed. My dad pointed him out to me and said “thats the kind of peace and happiness i want in life”.
At the time i thought it seemed like a mundane measurement of happiness, but somehow i still understood what my dad was trying to say. 20 yrs later, i feel like i really get it now.

Thank you @acreresidency for the friendships, the shared wisdom, the giggles, the yums (i owe the kitchen my life), the good tunes, cold creek dips, and shooting stars.
The perfect fuel to hum a million more tunes on many more leisurely walks 🌱🎵🎶

Shhhh, I can’t hear the stars ✨

One week since returning from @acreresidency and feeling rejuvenated, lighter, and thankful for the time with such beautiful individuals. Thank you to:

*the bat who decided to make an appearance during our last night in our room.
*the millipedes who nevertheless appeared every morning despite the accidental crunches
*the cows who made it sound like we were living in Jurassic Park
*Mrs. Picaridin 💅🏽

*the intimate conversations
*the shared skills and knowledge
*the kitchen crew for feeding us better than I’ve ever fed myself 😭🫶🏽

I know you’re not supposed to share your wishes after seeing a shooting star, but I saw 10.

what to even say abt the last couple weeks :’)

being at @acreresidency this summer was life changing! i let myself be, let myself soften, let myself cry! i also pleasure read a FICTION book for the first time in years.

the work i made felt inconsequential compared to the friends ive made at this residency :’) ok more to come probably hehe

Had the sweetest time with these beautiful humans and artists at @acreresidency 🥹❤️‍🔥

Highlights include
-cold creek plunges
-shooting stars
-5am sunrise hikes
-late night card games
-doing my first foundry pour!
-cleaning a deer skeleton
-casting parts of said skeleton
-outlandish party themes
-the world’s best cornbread
-so much laughter
-and sharing space with some of my favorite people 🫶🏼

It’s truly such a privilege to be a part of this creative community and to witness a moment of each of other’s practices. My heart is full—thank you @acreresidency

After nearly 13 months on view, 𝘊𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘎𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘯: 𝘘𝘶𝘦𝘦𝘳 𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘈𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘮 𝘪𝘯 𝘊𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘨𝘰 closes next week at the MCA. It’s hard to sum up how meaningful this project has been for me personally—and, hopefully, for the city—so I will just say a huge THANK YOU…

This talk moderated by @korinavh will feature the voices of artists shown in (Im)perceptible: the Queer and Now as well as artists from (Im)perceptible the remix! With the goal of uplifting queer art and artists, we wanted to make sure to highlight voices from both renditions, so please come support the artists!!

We are sooo excited for this!

On Sunday, May 3 at Blanc Gallery, photographers Diana Solís and Patric McCoy will be in conversation about their decades-long work documenting Chicago’s queer histories—from Solís’s powerful images of Latinx, feminist, and LGBTQ+ movements in Pilsen to McCoy’s iconic portraits of Black gay life captured during his 1980s bike rides across the city. Chicago-based curator Korina Hernandez will be moderating.
