The bravest thing I did this year happened two weeks ago.

I organized the second edition of The Opportunity Bridge by @afmstories. This year came close to not happening at all, but the mission mattered too much to let it slip.

Too many international students and people from underrepresented backgrounds face real barriers to jobs, funding for higher education, and business growth. This event exists to show them it’s possible & guide them on how to do it.

Several attendees from last year credited the event as the catalyst for landing their current roles. Someone told me they walked in feeling hopeless and left feeling motivated. Weeks later I’m still bumping into attendees who haven’t recovered from it. Two weeks later, neither have I.

Grateful to God, my community, my partner, my family and friends, my host who came all the way from London, my speakers who said yes without hesitation (one all the way from Scotland), and every volunteer and partner who made this happen. Without you all this would never have been possible.

I usually move on fast from my wins. Not this time. Making this happen alongside a full time role, my creative work, and everything that nearly stopped it, is something I’m proud of.

Two years in and I know more lives need this. For year three, I’m taking more courageous, scarier moves for this work.

My word for you: forget the reasons it won’t work & do it regardless. #adecadeinoneyear

A key thing I learned from winning 25 million in scholarships for my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees is that constant self development however small or big makes all the difference.

By working on yourself through learning, volunteering, work experiences, internships, creating, participating, interacting and attending your exposure increases which expands the size of your dreams, networks and proposed impact.

Scholarship providers don’t just want to invest in you, they want to invest in a large amount of people through you. This means that they need to be sure that you have made efforts to develop yourself to handle such a huge responsibility.

The key factor that helped me get both scholarships was not because I had initial plans for scholarships but more because of my desire to improve myself and build myself and thus when the opportunities came, I was able to pour from a promising cup.

My advice for you, especially individuals in the beginning of this journey is to constantly develop yourself. Don’t make it about scholarships, make it about you. Because with or without scholarships those self development measures will also help you stand out in other life opportunities. From jobs, to partnerships, to funding, to fellowships, to features, to publishing or to awards. Keep improving yourself. #afmstories #chosenforchevening #cheveningnga #cheveningscholarship #scholarships #scholarshipopportunities #fullyfundedscholarships #funding
