From MacKenna's artist talk about her show, EXTRAS

As an artist, I’ve always been drawn to illustration. For a very long time I wanted to be a professional comic-book artist, but around the time college began, I realized I didn’t have the patience for that and chose to practice oil painting. I fell in love with the medium and began to understand that I didn’t want to be confined by any label—”painter,” “illustrator,” whatever. I barely tolerate the phrase “fine art.”

"EXTRAS is the culmination of my first year post-college and my first step into my life as an independent professional artist. It's a collection of artefacts made during a massive period of transition."

MacKenna Hanson made these after leaving Chicago for Saint Cloud, Minnesota, where her parents had relocated as climate refugees from Hurricane Helene. Climate disaster, financial strain, a region she barely knew. In her words, the show is an expression of the liminal space she was living in.

Curated by Amanda Pentzak, first shown at the Paramount. Now at Formato Fine Arts.
