One last surprise behavior for River's guardians - scratch board training. River learned how to cooperatively file down his own nails in record time, like everything else he achieved during board and train. River is obsessed with using his paws during training, and we wanted to play into those strengths and give him a valuable life skill. His guardians were surprised and delighted at the transfer session with this behavior and everything he accomplished in 21 days with Jessie. Go forth and be exceptional River. Such a smart boy. ❤️

River is doing extremely well in board and train and we're very proud of him. He goes home Friday morning and he will be sorely missed. He's been a blast to train. Here he is doing mat work! We love using mat work for behaviors that require duration like a down-stay. He can also do that without a mat, but a mat is more comfortable and gives him visual parameters on exactly where he needs to be and can be taken anywhere as a source of comfort and security. This was trained solely with positive reinforcement. No corrections required and without the presence of leashes ❤️

Putting "nuisance" behaviors on cue can give your dog feedback about when it is OK to offer it and when it is not. It also helps to train better impulse control during play time and a precise target for the behavior. When the targets are not present, you do not offer it! Try it out! It's also plain FUN! River learns a high five and targeting my hands with his paws!

River learns the basics of table manners! Through repetition and routine, these behaviors will be so highly reinforced that they become a default choice that the dog begins to make. Have patience because it takes time! Rome wasn't built in a day and neither are solid life skills. They are called LIFE skills because they are practiced throughout a LIFETIME 😉
