Happy Friday Junior 😊 Struggled to get up and wanted to sleep in but I know a run always makes me feel better. Morning walks are super nice too.

Btw. Can you see what’s playing in the back 👀😅

it’s pouring rain in san diego today and i am reminiscing about my recent chilly summer visit to iceland where i got to throw a PUFFIN off a cliff/boat 🌦️🌈 !!

yes, sometimes rescuing puffins requires us to chuck them back into the ocean when they get lost!! the wind underneath their wings ensures a strong take off into the sea where they will mature and live for 3-4 years :)

the puffling patrol on the westman islands was truly one of the most magical things i ever got to do, all thanks to our guide and puffin researcher, thomas.

as a bird lover and naturalist, this rescue experience was something i have always dreamed of but i wanted to participate in a respectful and ethical way so we sought out and hired a private guide to educate us and teach us how to interact with these birds.

we learned about the threats to their survival (climate change, poaching, etc) and the efforts to preserve puffins and other icelandic bird species.

if you are ever interested in visiting the puffins in iceland, please do your research on these birds beforehand as they are very sensitive to even our presence near their nesting grounds.

i recommend staying away from large commercial group tours as large groups hiking on trails near their habitats can be very disruptive to the ecosystem and their nests, which are burrows underground.

they will stop feeding their young if humans are too close or too loud… so please remember to leave no trace, stay on marked trails, and give them their space. puffin couples usually only lay one egg a year so you can imagine how important it is to leave them be!

as for info on the puffling patrol, please visit www.lundi.is ! this is where thomas recommended we direct folks to go to learn about best rescue practices and the important work the community of the westman islands is doing to protect the puffins :)
