Hands, earth, water, light, and a burst of gold. ✨🙌

@kparentart | Kat Parent's three paintings hold the sacred in the smallest places: hands pressed in prayer around a thread of gold, cupped hands cradling a seedling as water runs through them, and open hands framing a sky full of stars.

Kat painted them while reading the medieval mystics Hildegard of Bingen and Julian of Norwich, the visionary fiction of Octavia Butler and Ursula Le Guin, and the protest songs of Malvina Reynolds. She wanted to capture moments that feel "both enormous and very small, like a bit of running water or a leaf held between two hands." A self-taught queer artist and teaching artist, Kat draws on illustration, protest printmaking, church art and folk art to share "wonder and delight" in a world that abounds "with absurd beauty and strangeness." 🌱

@jsonkehrer | Jason Kehrer's abstract painting glows with ochre, gold and sunlit yellow. Painted outdoors, his work grew out of years of plein air painting from direct observation and has turned intuitive and improvised, yet it still carries a strong sense of place. Trained as a printmaker, Jason has painted for nearly 20 years and has exhibited in Minnesota, New Mexico, Chicago and England.

And the setting couldn't be better: @zierratattoo | Zierra Tattoo, the newest shop on Payne Ave! 🎉 Born in Medellín, Colombia, Gersson specializes in Neotraditional, Black and Grey Realism and Geometric designs, and has been recognized at tattoo conventions across the country. His signature is yellow, a symbol of his Latin roots and a nod to gold. Jason's golden canvas feels right at home.

Welcome to the neighborhood, Zierra! Stop by, see the art, and say hello. 💛

Text from the song “Di Arbuzn” aka “S’iz der Step”, a song in Yiddish from the days of collective farming in the midcentury Soviet Union. At the time of folks being moved from population centers to new farm colonies in the far countryside, for better or for worse these Jewish farmers sang about their loves and their fruits 🍒🍓🍑

Do you have a juicy summer love? Share this vid with them so you can remember these nice folk-verified pickup lines 💋

We learn this from a classic version by the Pennywhistlers and our teacher Ethel Raim, via @yaleslavicchorus and @klezkanada

We’ll sing this and other bangers at Red Thread’s next concerts, Aug 28 and 30 in Mpls at Mixed Blood theater w Ardaa band and Cultural Fluency Initiative.

Green and white flyer with pictures of See More and Kat being cuties and playing music 16’ up in the trees from last year’s set and a pic from our rehearsal a few weeks back, with another pic of the two smiling under the sun in a hammock after their set last year. Over the green part at the top there is a transparent photo of a web in a tree in the woods.

Practicing. Droning. Deep Listening.

I was inspired by @kparentart's zine & the beautiful conclusion to Drone Not Drones to start learning Bella Ciao.

Deep Listening and Pauline were a big part of me picking up the accordion. 🪗
