surfboards are funny. everyone has an opinion on how they’re made, but barely anyone understands what actually goes into them.

working in-house with these brands gave me a whole new appreciation for the engineering behind their product, even with a background in surfboard production myself. this was a fun one to help bring to life after going out on my own — part tech breakdown, part trip down memory lane through some pretty important chapters in surf history.

Before it became a “winning shape,” it was just another chunk of foam in @dan__mann’s shaping bay.

very fortunate to work on the launch of @slaterdesigns’ drk in i-bolic 2.0 technology by @dan__mann and @kellyslater, the winning design from @stab’s all-star iteration of their double-blind board test media franchise, stab in the dark x starring @kellyslater. was lucky enough to have the opportunity to head into the shaping bay with my good buddy and partner @alohavisuals, to visit dan while he was working out of his room at the @darkartssurf facility in san diego. dan’s a remarkable human being on many levels, and i can’t wait for the world to learn his true story.

and this batch of imagery shows one aspect of his uniqueness...he’s one of the world’s only commuting shapers—every month or so, dan throws his shaping tools into a couple of beat-up bags, boards a flight from his place in costa rica that he built with his own hands to mow foam when needed—then flies back down south with his tool bags in hand to enjoy the Pura Vida.
