early morning aug. 2024 @redclay_studio setting up for a creative session, these artists came early and wanted to help me… grace like that

I must express

The vision, the loss
The pain, the loss
The gain, the loss
The light

I wanna be free of shame
That calls old names
And holds me through the night

I wanna life that grows upwards
Spent out in the sun

I wanna life I would die for
To smile till it comes

Some years ago, artists @kris.russo and @suraia_abud met in Iwaya Community as co-artists during a community-based residency. Over several weeks of shared engagement, learning, and exchange, they developed works that were later presented at the Iwaya Community Art Festival (ICAF, Lagos), — a project of our sister organisation, @vernacularartlab .

That encounter is a reminder of what becomes possible when alternative, community-rooted spaces exist: unexpected collaborations, cross-cultural dialogue, and artistic practices grounded in lived experience. These are the kinds of encounters that shape careers, deepen understanding, and build lasting cultural bridges.

IlaBar was created to continue this legacy in Osogbo — as a living space for artists, writers, thinkers, and creatives to meet, experiment, and exchange ideas beyond conventional art structures.

Today is the final day of the IlaBar crowdfunding campaign.
Your support, no matter the amount, will help sustain this platform and ensure that such meaningful artistic encounters continue.

Please donate and share.

Mass-produced craft tools of American material culture; crayons, markers, glue sticks, construction paper, scissors; are arranged in woven baskets on white cotton tablecloths. Visitors are invited to make postcards, write love letters, and/or exchange beaded friendship bracelets. The setup contrasts what’s commonplace in 21st century American life with what we associate with traditional craft forms, exploring memory, erasure and the blurry line between craft and contemporary art.

I ask: what counts as art? Where does it happen? How does care move through (and sometimes despite) timelines? Part offering. Part play. Part archive.

Set in Sonoma, California, a place layered with (relatively recent) histories of European settlement and agriculture, this event documents present-day American material culture through the gestures it invites.

Thank you to Samantha @film__sam sam , Cat @huntergatherersf , @abbotspassage, @gundlach_bundschu and my loving mama who made this possible♾️

prayer sachets (2019)

The audio you hear layered over the video of my art here is from a talk given by Zenju Earthlyn Manuel (@zenjuearthlynmanuel) at the Upaya Zen Center 6/31/19, Zenju asks, “How are we living and dying from our own inventions?”

“How do we collectively live with that invention?” He was referring to nuclear weapons.

Zenju Earthlyn Manuel’s response: “Like we are right this moment. We’re living with it anyway right now... now how do we live with it happily or not happily that’s something else.
But we’re living with it right now. We’re living with being there... knowing that that has happened... Many many many Indigenous cultures are trying to transform through ritual and ceremony... to transform this destruction of the Earth, and so we are doing that too, this is the ritual...”

If I tagged you I just want to tell you have a good weekend and I love you. #Happyeaster
Good Friday. Sacrifice, pain, rebirth.
Today’s math: Knowledge Build/Destroy — know yourself, build what’s real, destroy what ain’t.
The cross was transformation. Let truth resurrect you.

Every morning, when it is time to pray
For the finest things, for the finest things that the future brings
Red clay, on the road, all you need to know
Red clay, on the road, searching for his soul
