You know how much I loved reading ,the forest of enchantments, the character of sita was literally everything,a perfect example of a strong woman.

In today's episode of fiction meets fiction,we have author @krishmawrites
If you decide to pick her book,From Ash to Ashes, you would probably notice a lot in common between sita and mira.
Here's what she has to say about the book:

"Mira, the protagonist from the novel, From Ash to Ashes, by Krishma Arora, discovers that she is the main character of her life as she evolves and grows into a woman. The obstacles and challenges that she faces as a South Asian girl who immigrates to New York from India are all part of the process of her journey of self discovery through a life of forbidden love and difficult choices. Her strength stems from her innate spirituality and her sense of self worth. From a sheltered young girl she blossoms into a strong and free-thinking woman. Mira and her emotional journey will take you on a roller coaster of suspense, leaving you captivated and resonating with her story. This novel is fiction but based on true events."

Excerpt - "My school was predominantly white and I was, well, what many Punjabi’s call themselves, a wheatish color. I was immediately placed into an ESL (English as a Second Language) class, without any testing or assessment of my skills. I think the assumption was that I was brown and from the ghetto, how proper could my English be?

After a week in ESL, my lovely teacher who I still remember fondly, Dr. Barruso, turned and said to me, “your English is fantastic, you don’t need ESL.” She recommended that I be put back in regular classes.

Until I became a teacher myself, about 20 years later, did I finally realize what that had been about. It wasn’t my skills or English that had been assessed, it was the assessment of my physical appearance that had landed me in a category where I did not belong."

convincing you to read From Ash to Ashes 📖🥀

what’s one book that reflects you as a person?

read if you like:
-forbidden romance
-emotional reads
-coming of age story
-immigrant narratives

From Ash to Ashes is a breathtaking debut by @krishmawrites that explores the difficulties of growing up as an immigrant in America, trauma, grief, and womanhood. Throughout this book I found myself relating to so many experiences that the main character, Mira, faces as she seeks independence and finding her identity outside of the labels placed upon her as an immigrant & young woman of color living in America.

This novel is not an easy one to get through, in fact, there are so many emotional and heartbreaking moments that had me pausing to process. But I think that it’s important to read books that make us uncomfortable, to put ourselves in the shoes of others, if not to widen our own understandings of the world but of others and their own experiences. I highly recommend this book to all who want an emotional and beautiful read!

Perfect for fans of The Namesake and TJ Powar Has Something to Prove, From Ash To Ashes is a beautiful coming-of-age story. The prose, adorned with vivid imagery, effortlessly transports readers into Mira’s world, where the colors, scents, and sounds of her surroundings come alive.

From the very first page, readers are drawn into Mira’s world, a Sikh girl navigating the complexities of adolescence. Arora skillfully captures the intricate dance between cultural heritage and the Western world, showing the raw emotions of shame and self-loathing that often accompany the clash of these two realms.

Throughout the narrative, the author weaves a rich tapestry of Sikh customs and rituals, immersing readers. Nostalgic and full of 90s and early 2000s references, the vibrant scenes allow readers to not only visualize but truly feel Mira’s complicated emotions towards herself, her family, and her cultural heritage throughout the book.

At the heart of the story lies tragedy and hardship. As time goes on, the healing process is masterfully executed, adding layers of complexity to the narrative, and revealing the profound impact of untold truths on familial bonds.

As Mira grows up, readers are treated to a symphony of emotions and self-discovery. Arora allows readers to witness the blossoming of a character who not only embraces her heritage but also finds strength and pride in the unique tapestry of her cultural roots.

The prose of From Ash to Ashes is not just descriptive; it is poetic. The novel beautifully blends the personal with the cultural, creating a narrative that is as emotionally resonant as it is culturally illuminating.

This novel stands as a testament to the importance of embracing one's heritage, a universal message that transcends cultural boundaries. If you’re looking for an incredible read to start off the New Year that rings of truth and acceptance, be sure to pick up From Ash To Ashes.
