There are a lot things I don’t know enough about, and rescuing farm animals is one of those things.

I learned a lot from my conversation with Emily Potter, who has a farm rescue in Diamond Valley in southern Utah called The Salty Sanctuary.

I learned that the world needs people like her and I hope she’s able to meet her goal of a forever home for the nearly 30 animals she has rescued — including five cows.

“I have to do it for the animals because truthfully, they deserve it,” she said. “They deserve better and more loved than I can give them with our situation now, where I’m traveling to take care of them. When it gets cold and rainy like it is today, I want to be able to go out and put a blanket over my cute senior horse. I need this to happen because I don’t know where they will go if it doesn’t.”

I called Governor Cox’s office today with one question: where do I send a public records request?

Almost every agency in Utah posts that online. The Governor’s office doesn’t. The person I’d worked with before, Adam Duncan, has taken a job at another department — his email just bounces, and my Oct. 15 request bounced with it. The switchboard couldn’t say who handles records now and sent me to a voicemail. I had to call back to get an email address. The request went out this morning.

GRAMA gives an agency 10 business days to respond. This week the Utah System of Higher Education told me a request I filed Oct. 14 would take until January 15, 2027, with a $1,441 prepayment for 50 hours of staff time. That’s permitted under the statute’s “extraordinary circumstances” clause and its fee section — it’s legal. I’ve narrowed the request and asked for a revised estimate and a fee-waiver ruling. The question is whether three months and $1,441 is reasonable for records about how $8.2 million in public money was spent.

The Administrative Office of the Courts told me it was short-staffed, to try again in 30 days, and to use the courts’ paid Xchange portal instead. One week earlier the same office ran a similar query for me by email and charged $90. Pulling the 362,091 cases in that dataset through Xchange at $0.35 a search would run about $126,500 in search fees. I’ve appealed.

Some offices do this right. Orem built a transparency portal and has answered every request I’ve sent quickly. That should be the standard everywhere taxpayers are paying the bill.

Corrections to what I said on camera: GRAMA’s deadline is 10 business days, not 14. The Xchange estimate is about $126,500, not $136,000. USHE’s extension and fee are allowed by statute — my issue is how long and how much, not that they broke the law. And the person who answered was at the main switchboard, not a records office; she was helpful, the office just gives her nothing to hand out. They get paid when the court sends you.

Utah judges routinely order people into treatment programs, and the people ordered there pay. So I pulled the public records on who runs these programs, who approves them, and who profits.

🔴 The state board that approves Utah’s domestic-violence treatment programs and hands judges the list is chaired by Jana Fulmer. Her nonprofit, Amethyst Center for Healing, is on that list and paid her $80,000 last year. The law that created the board has no conflict-of-interest rule.

🔴 Utah publishes no data on whether that treatment works. A provider on the approved list was cited for taking clients’ money before it was licensed; the inspector wrote it had been operating “for over a year.” The fine was $200.

🔴 Odyssey House, one of the biggest programs courts and jails send people to, paid its CEO $574,187. His pay went up 29% the same year revenue went down 9%.

🔴 A year after filing its taxes, Odyssey added $6.9 million in expenses. The whole explanation: “An audit adjustment was made after filing the original tax return.”

🔴 A client there was assaulted and left with serious brain injuries. The state’s fine was $200.

🔴 Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson’s chief of staff, Joe Pyrah, sits on Odyssey’s board. Her office runs the state’s lobbyist and campaign-finance disclosures.

🔴 Attorney General Derek Brown, a former lobbyist for The Other Side Academy and the pharmacy-benefit-manager trade group, has taken campaign money from the parent companies of the two drug middlemen Utah is suing, and $10,000 from a PAC tied to his old lobbying firm while in office.

No court or ethics body has found wrongdoing by anyone named here. The inspection citations are the state’s own findings. Every fact is from a tax return, a state inspection, a statute or a campaign filing, and every slide names its source.

I’ve filed records requests for the rest: every payment, every referral count, every tax break. I’ll post what comes back.

Sure, running won’t bring the Great Salt Lake back — aside from maybe sweating beads of salt that may be absorbed by the atmosphere.

However, staying silent about things that you are passionate about won’t either — which is why locals are running 260 miles around “Where the Water Was.”

The event started Tuesday at the State Capitol and was spearheaded by professional ultra-runner Dakota Jones. He is also a co-founder of Footprints, a nonprofit that helps runners turn their platforms into community climate action. He said his goal is to raise funds to support organizations working to save the Great Salt Lake.

Jones initially set out to do the run solo, but due to injury, turned it into a group/relay event.

“This run was never about one person doing hard things; it’s about getting a lot of people who live here to work together for a hard thing,” he said. “That’s what we’re doing for the run, and that’s what we have to do to save the lake.”

There’s something about ultra-running and ultra-runners that may not resonate with the general population.

As an ultra-runner, I know.

We seek what many would call misery and reframe is as joy.

Braving the elements is what we seek, whether it’s mental, physical, elemental or all of the above — and sometimes those elements are too much.

Several hundred runners set out to run 240 miles in the La Sal Mountains in Moab, and many made it over 100 miles (some even 200) before the race was canceled due to weather.

Even so, a man I spoke to said it was “overall a positive experience.”

“You come and try your hardest, and things happen,” Brian Jones of Spanish Fork said. “You can’t plan for everything. I saw a lot of people with a positive attitude. Pick your head up and look forward to the next thing that you get to do.”
