In April I showed my series “Softies” in (Supposedly Like) Oil and Water at Gewölbekeller Berlin, a group show from and for the Black queer community. Curated by @nicki_g17 and @lou_morari @georgina_magklara . Really happy I got to share the space with amazing artists. Swipe for some of their work and a few moments from the show. Thanks to everyone who came by. 📷pics by 4.Nyambura 1.,3.,5.,7.,8. @lou_morari

Kunika Tappert is a German/Zambian artist born and raised in Berlin. Her paintings don’t depict reality. They visualize what’s happening underneath it. Her work sits at the intersection of contemporary surrealism, expressionist painting, and comic-inspired visual language. Distorted figures, non-naturalistic color, pop-cultural symbols dropped into dreamlike, unstable spaces. The result is something that feels simultaneously familiar and deeply unsettling. In the best way. What she’s really painting is the interior. Fragmented identity. Psychological states. The inner narratives we carry but rarely see reflected back at us. Her canvases oscillate between narrative suggestion and raw painterly intensity, never resolving, always pulling you deeper. This is not art that explains itself. It asks you to sit with it.
