There’s so many reasons to be in a band.

— People do care. But even if it doesn’t seem like anyone cares, that’s not the point. Because you care. You care about your art and you feel compelled to create. So, make it.

— No, you’re not 20. But you’ve learned a lot and you’re still alive and breathing. That’s plenty reason enough to keep creating. In fact, it makes perfect sense to create and create until you’re no longer able. It’s a gift. Don’t take it for granted.

— Making music is a reward in and of itself. The gratification that comes with making it has an immeasurable ROI. Money isn’t the only metric and it’s not the only scorecard.

— There’s a million bands. Each with their own unique and special point of view and place in the world. Your perspective. Your one-of-a-kind signature. Your sound. Your voice. Your gift to the world.

— You COULD be focusing on other things. But it’s important to focus on the life-giving things because the ripple effects spread beyond to enhance everything else. Some things are worth doing simply because you love it.

— You’re not a rockstar
and art is still worth making. It will find the audience it’s meant to find. Even if the only person it finds is you.

— It’s a lot of work. Like most true and pure things. But the work is a key part of the reward. The pursuit is a big part of what makes it worthwhile.

— The music industry has always had varying degrees of give and take. It’s both fully saturated and brimming with possibilities and opportunities.

— “What if no one shows up?”

Have fun and do it anyways.

There’s 100 reasons to be in a band. Art for arts sake is high on the list.

Which of these two is your favorite?

The year was 1997. I was 13 years old. My friends and I would sit in our rooms after school and on the weekends listening to music. I remember scattered CDs on floors. I remember posters on walls. I remember shitty beat up boomboxes on clothes dressers. What a time! Among those scattered CDs was various Fat Wreck and Epitaph Records releases. Unwritten Law was in there. Less Than Jake was in there. Homegrown was in there.

Then in 1997 someone caught wind of Blink-182. We had heard “Carousel” and “M+M’s” on skateboarding videos. But they hadn’t fully breached our awareness yet. But Dude Ranch was a game changer. My best friend at the time had a birthday party and he requested someone buy him Dude Ranch. We listened to it during the entire party run time and we all loved it. In the mix was Metallica’s “Reload”. What a crazy time!

Dude Ranch became a very important album for all of us. It had the same catchy and fast energy that MXPX’s Life In General had. But it also had that sophomoric humor that 13 year old suburban boys were destined to latch onto. They were just a little more immature than NOFX and The Vandals and we ate it up.

For this reason, Dude Ranch will always remind of that very formative time. It served as the soundtrack to my youth in a lot of ways. DR often gets overlooked for its iconic riffs and melodies. But they are there.

Fast forward almost exactly two years later and “What’s My Age Again?” is all over MTV. The pop sheen production almost felt jarring at first. But the song was an undeniable hit. Not to mention it had a simple eye-grabbing music video that featured three naked men running outside in public for some reason. Blink was about to BLOW UP. I remember purchasing Enema and listening to it on the bus during the last week of my freshman year of high school. Also an incredibly formative time. Enema was the best sounding punk album I had ever heard. I think it honestly astounded us how big and shiny it sounded.

Within a year, Blink was one of the biggest bands on the planet. Enema is Blink’s “Dookie”. Their breakout hit that cemented itself in pop culture.

“Momentum” is the first track on our new album “The Fresh Start Effect”. It features both of my kiddos (singing and clapping)!

I was originally thinking it would be a 30 second intro to the record. I’m glad I decided to make it a complete song. We’re so stoked with how it came out. I love the 2nd chorus. I wanted to subvert expectations, but I didn’t know if it would work. Thankfully, Kyle, our producer, thought it was great—so we kept it!

“The Fresh Start Effect” has been out for ONE WEEK!

What’s your favorite tune? Is it Momentum?
