a day late, but yesterday was national coming out day.

when we came out, we were simply hoping to still be loved and accepted by the people we knew. gay marriage wasn’t legal, and no one around us talked about gay people having children.

if those two lost boys could see us now. married. holding our daughter. building a life we didn’t know we were allowed to dream of.

the world feels like it’s moving backwards. in too many places, being gay is still a crime, and here at home, the rights we fought for are being challenged.

we share our love and our family publicly because somewhere, there are kids like us, scared to come out and wondering what their future could hold. we hope that seeing us helps them know that this life is possible for them, too.

you deserve to be loved. you deserve a family. you deserve a future you’re excited to live!

New dads Kyle and Jove say that uncertainty is a big part of the surrogacy journey.

"Each day, we waited to find out whether our embryos had made it through the next stage, and we were terrified we might end up with none," Kyle told us. "When our first transfer didn't take, that fear became even more real. The whole process is also incredibly expensive, with no guarantee of how it will turn out. Carrying all of that hope and fear at the same time was really hard."

The couple says that finding community can be very valuable, especially during setbacks.

"We were there for each other, and we also leaned on the incredible people who guided us along the way," Kyle said. "We're especially grateful for the community and support we found through Men Having Babies, and for the care we received from our agency and clinic team. They helped us through all the uncertainty."

Poppy Torrence Meyer, born at 12:39 PM on September 29, has already changed our lives forever. 💕

For nine months, she was carried and cared for by our incredible surrogate, who gave us the greatest gift of our lives. And when Poppy was ready to enter the world, she was welcomed by an extraordinary team of women who cared for her, supported us, and helped bring our daughter safely into our arms. We will never be able to fully express our gratitude!

As two gay dads, we know that families like ours are possible because of people who believe there is more than one beautiful way to create a family. Surrogacy gave us our daughter. It gave Poppy her dads. And it gave us a family we once could only dream about.

We also know that the path to parenthood for LGBTQ+ people cannot be taken for granted. We will always stand up for surrogacy, reproductive freedom, and the right of every family to be treated with dignity and respect.
