More visions from Zanzibar 2023.

I was invited to present and engage students in our @superpowerofmeproject in March of this year. It was amazing to work with such eager, enthusiastic and creative students from 3 schools. Though it was a full-on schedule, I managed toward the end of my time there to treat myself to a weekend of leisure, and photography at one of the many breathtaking beaches on the tip of the island.

في تأملها لهذه التجربة، تتحدث شيخة المطيري، الكاتبة والشاعرة الإماراتية، عن ورشة «القوة الكامنة في داخلي» كمساحة احتضنت أصوات اليافعين ومنحتهم فرصة التعبير عن أحلامهم بثقة ووضوح.

ضمن بيت الحكمة، وبتنظيم المجلس الإماراتي لكتب اليافعين، تحوّلت الكتابة إلى فعل اكتشاف، حيث استلهم المشاركون من معرض «لاعب النرد: محمود درويش» ليصوغوا نصوصًا تعبّر عن هويتهم وتطلعاتهم.

تجربة أكدت أن القوة الحقيقية لا تُمنح، بل تُستخرج حين يجد الشاب والشابة بيئة تؤمن بما يحملونه في داخلهم.

In her reflection on the workshop, Shaikha Al Mutairi, Emirati writer and poet, speaks of Super Power of Me as a space that embraced young voices and encouraged them to articulate their dreams with clarity and confidence.

Held at the House of Wisdom and organised by the UAEBBY, the workshop drew inspiration from The Dice Player: Mahmoud Darwish, allowing participants to explore identity and ambition through writing.

It was a reminder that real strength is not given from the outside. It emerges when young people are supported, heard, and trusted to discover what already lives within them.

في هذه المقابلة، تتأمل ميثاء الخياط، الكاتبة والرسامة الإماراتية والمستشارة في مؤسسة ربع قرن لصناعة القادة والمبتكرين، تجربة «القوة الكامنة في داخلي» بوصفها مساحة تعليمية وإنسانية أتاحت لليافعين أن يقتربوا من ذواتهم بصدق، وأن يختبروا الكتابة كأداة وعي واكتشاف.

من زيارة معرض «لاعب النرد: محمود درويش» في بيت الحكمة، إلى صياغة النصوص وتحويلها إلى بورتريهات تعبّر عن أصحابها، تشكّلت رحلة إبداعية متكاملة جمعت بين التأمل والتعبير والصورة.

ورشة نظمها المجلس الإماراتي لكتب اليافعين بالشراكة مع بيت الحكمة، واحتضنت 13 يافعًا من مؤسسة ربع قرن في تجربة أكدت أن منح الثقة والمساحة هو الخطوة الأولى نحو اكتشاف القوة التي تبدأ من الداخل.

In this interview, Maitha Al Khayat, Emirati author, illustrator, and consultant at the Rubu’ Qarn Foundation for Creating Leaders and Innovators, reflects on Super Power of Me as a meaningful learning space where young people were invited to engage honestly with themselves.

From experiencing The Dice Player: Mahmoud Darwish exhibition at the House of Wisdom to shaping personal texts and translating them into portraits, the workshop unfolded as a thoughtful creative journey connecting reflection, writing, and image.

Organised by the UAEBBY in collaboration with the House of Wisdom, the experience brought together 13 youth from the Rubu’ Qarn Foundation in a process that affirmed how trust and creative space can
unlock inner strength.

“Trinidad, Cuba 2024. I always stay on Calle Maceo across the street from my dear friends. One of the main reasons I love staying here on the outskirts of the town is that I get to immerse myself in the play of the children. Since the pandemic, Cuba is seeing the worst of times and you feel it in the streets. It's hard. But the play of children brings the lightness that I hope will never fade.”

Happy Women’s Day to my mom, aunties, colleagues, friends, and all aligned spirits.
Women are the first doctors, teachers, lovers, accountants, and nutritionists of our families. When we are strong and supported, our families and communities thrive. When we are lacking in any area, it can affect the health, spirit, and financial stability of the whole household.
We are the spirit and backbone of the family.
Cheers to the warriors who sometimes have to carry the role of both mom and dad—holding the family with strength, love, and resilience.
Today we honor the wisdom, labor, resilience, and love that women carry every single day.

When Karen Zusman speaks about Super Power of Me, she is not describing a concept, but a journey, one that invites young people to write themselves into the world, and to be seen as they choose to be seen.

In this interview, we step into the vision of the photographer, poet, and founder of the initiative, who guided 13 youth from the Rubu’ Qarn Foundation for Creating Leaders and Innovators through a creative dialogue between poetry and portraiture, presented as part of The Dice Player: Mahmoud Darwish at the House of Wisdom, organised by the UAEBBY.

A conversation about how words can become mirrors, and how an image can honour the strength that already lives within.
