Throwback from Watches and Wonders Geneva. Patek Philippe unveiled two new references of the Golden Ellipse, both featuring a sunburst olive green dial, housed in a white gold case and powered by the ultra-thin automatic calibre 240. The only difference is size; pictured above left is the Reference 5738G-001 measuring 34.5 mm * 39.5 mm * 5.9 mm, and pictures above right is a new reduced size Reference 3738/100G-014 measuring 31.1 mm * 35.6 mm * 5.9 mm. In the world of classical and elegant dress watches, the Golden Ellipse has very few equals. It sits in its own league. Its greatness lies in its simplicity. Shadows and "Lumen." Often my friends wonder what happiness I get from writing about watches. There are several, yet the opportunity to handle masterpieces like the A. Lange & Sohne Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar "Lumen" is definitely one of them. Launched in April during Watches and Wonders Geneva, it is the seventh Lange wristwatch to feature the brand's elusive "Lumen" treatment. A limited edition of 50 individually numbers pieces, it is an ultra-rare watch within a brand that only crafts around 5000 watches a year. Tony de Haas, the brand's Technical Director, lit her up for me using a UV torch. For a few minutes I was in horological heaven. Now we are at the halfway point between the last Geneva show and the next one in April. I wonder what this magnificent German watchmaker will unveil. The TAG Heuer F1 was a childhood obsession. I was as crazy for it as most are for FPJs, Lange's, Pateks, RRs today. Years later, the Lange 1 became an obsession ever since I discovered the brand in a magazine in a Zurich hotel room and kept ordering Lange catalogues year after year. The DB25GMT is one of those watches that reveals itself slowly. At first glance, it's the mesmerizing depth of the dial that captures your attention, the signature blued titanium sphere floating above a beautifully textured silvered landscape. Spend a little more time with it, and the ingenuity of the GMT display begins to shine. Rather than competing for attention, the second time zone is integrated with remarkable elegance, accompanied by a inbuilt day/night indication (At 6 p.m., the gold half of the GMT day/night indicator begins to give way to the heat-blued half, signifying the transition to nighttime. The process reverses at 6 a.m., with the gold side gradually reappearing to mark the return of daylight.) Truly romantic. What continues to impress me most is the architecture behind it all. Every surface, bridge, and component of the titanium movement reflects the distinctive De Bethune approach to watchmaking: technical innovation executed with an obsessive commitment to finishing.
