We’ve all felt it in Baton Rouge. You turn the corner onto a shaded street, and suddenly the walk gets a whole lot more enjoyable. 🌳☀️ That’s the Urban Heat Island Effect in action! But tree-lined streets stay cooler, making everyday activities like walking the dog, biking to work, waiting at the bus stop, or simply getting the mail a little more comfortable. As our city continues to grow, so does the importance of protecting and expanding our tree canopy! More trees don’t just make Baton Rouge look greener, they help create healthier neighborhoods, reduce dangerous heat, and make our streets more livable for everyone. 😊 Cooling Baton Rouge starts with growing our canopy. 🌿 #morethanpaper #batonrougegreen #louisianacommunityforests #UrbanHeatIsland

The Swamp Titi (tie-tie) may not be as well known as the cypress or magnolia, but this native Louisiana tree puts on one of the most spectacular flower shows of the summer. 🌸🐝 Native to the southeastern U.S., including #Louisiana, the Swamp Titi (#CyrillaRacemiflora) thrives in swamps, bayous, and other wetland habitats. In late spring and summer, its long clusters of tiny white flowers (racemes) brighten the landscape while attracting bees, butterflies, and other important pollinators. 🦋 Fun fact: Swamp Titi is one of the South’s best trees for pollinators. Its nectar is especially attractive to native bees, making it an important part of healthy wetland ecosystems. If you’re thinking about planting one: Swamp Titi grows best in full sun to partial shade in moist soils, but also adapts well to drier urban conditions once it’s established. It’s a great choice for rain gardens and low-lying areas where other trees may struggle or standing alone in the yard as a statement tree. #batonrouge #southernflowers #urbanforestry

Why stop to smell the roses when you can smell a magnolia bloom? Louisiana’s beautiful state flower, the #SouthernMagnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) can grow over 80 feet tall and is loved for its fragrant flowers, evergreen leaves, and striking seed cones. After blooming, the tree produces cone-like fruits that open to reveal bright red seeds, which are an important food source for birds and wildlife. 🐦 Fun fact: the shiny green leaves have rusty brown undersides, giving the tree its signature two-toned look when the wind blows through the branches. If you’re thinking about planting one, you need to think big! They need lots of space! They thrive in full sun to partial shade and prefer rich, well-drained soil with consistent moisture. Once established, they’re surprisingly hardy and make incredible shade trees for #Louisiana landscapes. 🌱 Tree Care Tip: Magnolias have shallow roots, so adding mulch or leaving their dropped leaves around the base helps protect roots and retain moisture during hot southern summers. What’s your favorite thing about Southern Magnolias? The blooms, the fragrance, or the iconic glossy leaves? #BatonRouge #southernflowers #urbanforestry

Don’t let a good investment go to waste! Trees are one of the best ways to invest in your community for your community! For every $1 invested, $2-5 is returned to the region through Eco-Benefits, improved property values, and safer neighborhoods! Sadly, many of these initial investments don’t pay off because of poor planting and maintenance practices - by both home gardeners and landscape professionals alike. These magnolias, for instance, could have been major assets to this sidewalk and its surrounding homes and businesses, but unfortunately they were planted too deeply. Instead of thriving, they will continue to slowly decline over the next several years. The addition of “Volcano Mulching” has further added insult to injury. Losses such as this can diminish trust and limit planting opportunities in the future. Some quick tips to not let your investments go to waste: -When removing your tree from its container, cut major roots circling or “girdling” the rootball -Expose the “trunk flare” / tops of roots as they enter the soil -Plant 2-4” above the grade of the surrounding soil -Dig a shallow hole that’s 2-3x the width of the rootball -MULCH (in a donut shape), MONITOR, WATER, repeat -Remove/readjust stakes 9-12 months post planting Please share our planting guide with your friends, neighbors, and even your contractors BEFORE work has begun. If you spend extra time during planting and monitoring in the first 1-3 years your investment can really pay off both for you AND your community! #urbanforestry #Louisiana #BatonRouge #Investment #TreeTips

The forest at #MoncusPark continues to grow. 🌳   Thanks to the support from Louisiana Community Forests, we recently completed another phase of woodland restoration efforts across the Park, including the planting of more than 250 native trees and the expansion of woodland habitat along our trails.   This project is helping restore natural ecosystems, improve biodiversity, and create a healthier urban forest for our community to enjoy for years to come.   Read more about the project, the process, and the incredible partners who helped make it possible at the 🔗 in our bio.

Happy #TBT! We’d been waiting a long time to bring this project to life, and getting to finally see trees going into the ground Downtown felt pretty special. There’s something exciting about imagining what these streets will look like years from now when these trees are taller, fuller, and casting shade over the people walking, working, living, and celebrating our city daily. Projects like this take a whole lot of collaboration, patience, planning, and people who care deeply about Baton Rouge. Huge thanks again to Senator #FranklinFoil, @u.s.forestservice Urban & Community Forestry (@la.communityforests), @thecityofbr Department of Public Works (Maintenance), @downtownbatonrouge, and #MeMoesLandscaping for helping make it happen. Watching all of these different trees find new homes downtown was such a rewarding moment for our team. 💚 American Hornbeam, Pondcypress, Southern Magnolia, Winged Elm, Willow Oak, Native Fringe Tree, Green Hawthorn, Honeylocust, Chinese Pistache, Dahoon Holly, Lacebark Elm, American Holly, American Elm, and Sweetbay Magnolia all joined the downtown canopy that day 🌱 And honestly, this is the kind of work that your support helps make possible. If you love seeing Baton Rouge become greener, healthier, cooler, and more connected through trees, we’d be so grateful if you joined or renewed during our MAY THE FOREST BE WITH YOU Membership Campaign this month 🌲⭐ Link In Bio! We’d love to know! What part of #BatonRouge would you love to see planted next? 👀 #urbanforestry

Have you ever spotted a Parsley Hawthorn in bloom? Native to the southeastern U.S., including right here in Louisiana, the #ParsleyHawthorn (Crataegus Marshallii) thrives along streambanks, wetlands, and low-lying woodlands. It’s a small, deciduous tree that packs a big ecological punch, its spring flowers support pollinators and help kick off the growing season! 🌸 Fun fact: Its leaves look just like parsley, giving this tree its common name and making it one of the easiest hawthorns to identify in the wild! If you’re thinking about planting one: Parsley Hawthorns prefer full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soils (though they can tolerate occasional flooding like a true Louisiana native). Once established, they’re relatively low-maintenance and can even handle urban conditions. Just give them space, those thorny branches mean they’re best planted away from walkways. 🌱 Tree Care Tip: A layer of mulch helps retain moisture and keeps roots cool during hot southern summers. What’s your favorite native tree to spot around #Louisiana, and have you ever noticed the parsley-like leaves on this one? #urbanforestry #community #batonrouge

Trees + Community + GORGEOUS WEATHER = a perfect Saturday in White Castle🌳 . Saturday, we hosted a small #TreeGiveaway in White Castle, which was incredibly rewarding. It’s not everyday that we can host a neighborhood tree giveaway, so we drank up the opportunity — talking trees, best planting practices, hanging out in a pocket #FoodForest, and meeting so many great neighbors. . The icing on the cake were all the kids who stopped by to create a spring tree watercolor 🎨, tour the garden, and hang out in this community space (and yes, playtime definitely happened 🏈🏀). Fun Fact: Many of these neighbors were picking up their trees as they were in route to vote! . Good vibes, great people, and best of all: more trees heading home and expanding the canopy of #WhiteCastleLA and #BRGreenTeam’s impact 💪🏽. . Thank you DaiglesSupermarket your generosity of space, @dow_usgc for the start up funding, and IbervilleParish & @lsuagcenter, for the long-term community partnership! . #LouisianaCommunityForests
