My friend Ciara @la__tigresse__ , an incredible tattooer living in Calgary, relating a story about how I am basically, their goth mom. Part of a longer discussion we had back in the early days of summer 2023. Ciara and I have known each other for many years and even briefly worked together for a few months when Arcane was still on Commercial Drive. They also blacked out my throat this year! You are a powerhouse, my friend.

Ciara (pronounced kira; they/them) is a tattooer of mixed Indian and white heritage working in Calgary. They've been tattooing for 9 years, and they specialize in applying their knowledge of Indian textile art, mehndi design, and mughal art to their tattoo practice. Their interest in this area stemmed from their first job at the age of 16 as a mehndi artist in Edmonton, where they received training under a mentor in traditional motifs and regional styles. From there, they continued developing an art practice that lead them to study at Emily Carr University for three years before they started teaching themselves to tattoo. Since then, they've found mentorship from artists in Calgary such as Doug Fink @horihyo, owner of one of Calgary's oldest tattoo shops, among many others.

Ciara is currently focusing on large scale tattooing which allows their indo-decorative work to have the most impact. They also explore other facets of Asian art history in their work, making each piece for every client a research project aiming for responsibly done, intentional, cultural work tailored to a client's story.

Just wanted to remind you that the YOTR Auction is coming to a close soon, but you still have time to place your bids! You can find the link in our bio.

We have a beautiful piece up for auction titled "White Rabbit, White Rabbit, White Rabbit" by Ciara Havishya. Happy bidding!

Ciara went to Emily Carr University in 2012 where they studied illustration as a major before tattooing full time. They continue to primarily practice tattooing with a focus on Indian textile art, Asian historical art, and Asian folk art. Their piece “white rabbit, white rabbit, white rabbit” references their connection to prairie landscapes and the grief of seeing the landscape disappear and change from human mismanagement. The title of the piece refers to a campfire ritual of reciting the phrase when smoke gets into one’s eyes, so this painting functions like a prayer to the rabbit to clear the smoke from the fires we set.
