Today, I hosted an inter level debate in my department as part of my duties as Vice President Academics. Since the event came from my office, it would have been normal for me to anchor it. It would have been a great opportunity for visibility and recognition. But I chose not to. Instead, I gave the opportunity to a few first time hosts who had simply been waiting for a chance to try. And they did so well. That moment reminded me that leadership is not always about being at the center. Leadership is creating opportunities for others. As you climb, bring people along. Give people room to grow. Give people a chance to be seen. Now, when people commend today's debate, it will not just be the executives that get recognized. These hosts will also be seen and celebrated. That is leadership.
