“You deserve love that respects your boundaries, that honors your body, that makes you feel safe and whole, and makes room for your whole self just as you exist.”

Day of Action to End Violence Against Women Living With HIV is this Friday, October 23. It was created by @laadyv1, Morénike Giwa Onaiwu, PhD, and Positive Women’s Network - USA after two women living with HIV were murdered because their status became known.

We created this day to stop violence against our community and to remind the world, what we deserve: Love and care. Join us in making this truth and Marnina’s love letter a reality for all women living with HIV.

PWN-USA members spoke on or led over 38 sessions, actions, and plenaries at #USCHA2026. Though some might have been exhausted by the work, we were reinvigorated and reminded of our purpose:

To empower our community and build a future where we all prosper. The political determinants of health informed our conversations while MIPA grounded our every action. And joy was with us at every turn

The road ahead is tough. But we’re tougher. Watch this space to see the collaborations and strategies that came out of our conversations in Southern California.

PWN-USA joined leaders at the U.S. PLHIV Caucus pre-USCHA conference to discuss our community’s needs and the future.
The room was filled with PWN members and peers who have gone onto lead their own organizations. As @laadyv1 noted during the all day meeting, it’s okay to step down if you need to. While @evanyturk1 explained that we are building new leaders to do the work that we can’t.

@saint.michaelelizabeth brought it all together by affirming that we are building a movement where we can live — not one where we burn ourselves out.

At PWN, we never assume that the problem we can see is the only problem at hand, or the cause of the situation. This framework is called, “Root Cause Analysis.” As our former co-director @laadyv1 explains:

“Root cause analysis allows us to look at the root of why an issue is occurring, not the symptom of why the issue is occurring. Just like on a tree, we might have some bad leaves. Look, we can pull off those leaves, we can treat those leaves. But until we solve what’s happening at the root, we will not solve the problem of the sick leaves.”

18 years ago, 28 women (cis and trans) and gender diverse people living with HIV came together because they were tired of being ignored by the HIV movement. Rather than focus on the harm as a silo issue, they recognized racism, patriarchy, and homophobia as the root cause of the problem and developed Positive Women’s Network-USA in response.

1 out of 4 women living with HIV experiences violence for sharing her serostatus. Over 50% of women living with HIV have experienced intimate partner violence. This violence is one of the leading indicators that a woman will acquire HIV in the first place.

If you want to talk about someone’s private health information, you have to make it safe for them to share it. If they choose to.

These issues are huge for women living with HIV. They’re why @laadyv1 and our ally Morénike Giwe Onaiwu, Ph.D worked with @pwn_usa to found National Day to End Violence Against Women Living With HIV. This was in 2014, after two PWN members were killed.

National Day to End Violence Against Women Living With HIV is on October 23. Instead of demanding things of people living with HIV, work with us to ensure that we are safe to show up in the first place.
