We are excited to share ‘A Poem For Our Warriors’, consisting of real VHL warriors and family members, all affected by the rare genetic condition.

Featuring over 20 participants, who have experienced over 100 tumours between them, the video relays a heartfelt poem on the battle with VHL (von Hippel Lindau Disease), and the long term hope that treatment and research will bring to the lives of those affected.

Thank you to our warriors and family members who took part in the video. Find out more about their journeys with VHL and the video: https://vhl-uk-ireland.org/a-poem-for-our-warriors/

1. Shawn Mastrantonio (@_5ll15_): Síndrome de Von-Hippel-Lindau, em que há aumento de risco principalmente, para o câncer renal e hemangioblastomas;
2. Jennifer Salgado (@jennifer_salgado_official): Síndrome de Li-Fraumeni, em que há aumento de risco principalmente para câncer de mama, sarcomas e leucemia;
3. Maggie (@maggies_mutation): Síndrome de Lynch, em que há aumento de risco, principalmente, para câncer de intestino;
4. Angelina Jolie: Síndrome mama-ovário, cujo nome parece ser auto-explicativo, mas predispõe também a outros tipos de tumores, incluindo câncer de próstata.

Today is Run Streak Day 5479!

I have run, at least one mile, every day, for 15 full years.

During that time I have run through illness and injury, births and deaths, and all of what life throws at us! 😊

My average daily mileage is 4.346.

Lowest annual mileage was in 2015, 1012.2 miles.

I hobbled through most of the year pretending I didn’t have a serious knee injury. Finally saw an orthopedic surgeon (injury in January, Dr visit in October), who recommended physical therapy for a partial tear of the medial meniscus of my left knee. I was so sure my streak was ending, was certain I was surgery bound!

That PT sparked a new commitment to my running journey and for the next two years I was continually marathon training.

My first attempt was unsuccessful after training through two issues, right hamstring and left hip, I attempted my first full marathon at Sugarloaf, Maine April 2015. My injuries were not healed but I went for it anyway, I could not run after 9.5 miles, I continued to 13.5 and called it. Lesson learned, don’t try to run a marathon injured.

I completed my first full 02OCT2016, my 50th birthday at Wineglass in Corning, NY. I also met some wonderful people who welcomed Debbie and me into their lives. 😊

I ran Vermont City Marathon spring of 2017, my quickest full marathon, 3:39:32, not too close to a Boston Qualifying time, but not too bad.

The following October I ran the Wineglass Half in my 1:35:49! Conditions the morning of that race were perfect, I considered running the full that weekend, thinking it could be THE race to BQ, but I didn’t try to switch. I ran Marine Corps Marathon just 3 weeks later, in D.C. it was so hot that day…

As I trained for the following Spring’s marathon, was signed up for Vermont City again, my training fell apart.

I have not run a full since October 2017…

My highest mileage in my streak was, unsurprisingly, 2017, with 2378.35 miles.

I value my ability to run everyday. I am hopeful to get back into a training routine to be more competitive than I am now. I’m luck and thankful, to have a supportive wife and family.

My total streak mileage is 23,814 🤞 to 15 more years.

AGELESS ATHLETE 3.0, PRINCIPLE #7 - CORE ACTION AND CONTROL
.
Developing core control and midline alignment awareness is the feed forward mechanism for greater expressions for strength. This is why core activation is part of the comprehensive @cppscoaches certification warm-up protocol. In this exercise, we are introducing agitation (see Chaos manual) and additional loading via ankle weights and a weighted med ball to a conventional birddog exercise. As you know, the birddog is 1/3 of the McGill back rehab protocol, but is also a fundamental core stability exercise that must be developed for all lifters and athletes.
.
Why is it so important? Because tension is coordinated contralaterally from hip to opposite shoulder across the thoracolumbar fascia (TLF) and improving the athlete’s intent to develop this line of tension AND activate the appropriate muscle groups is fundamental. And since we are creating agitation with the addition of the Bosu ball, the athlete has to work harder to overcome this instability to create more control. Instability is inversely related to strength potential but directly related to improving balance, proprioception, kinesthetic awareness, and helping to rehab specific injuries and restrictions.
.
Agitation and chaos training is integrated into the Ageless Athlete system ( @agelessathletes ) and will help you improve your position and train more efficiently. And that is the goal - training for a lifetime.
