POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Sunday at The Bellevue Theatre, and the room showed up ready to listen.

Lacey Schwartz Delgado took a selfie from the stage in her ‘Re/Pair’ hat, and the whole audience waved right back. That’s the feeling she was hoping for: people leaving a theater still talking to each other.

Participant Rachel Nicks, a doula and the founder of Birth Queen, was there to celebrate with us.

Thank you to Tom Hall, executive director of the Montclair Film Festival, and the whole team for having us at the 15th festival, and to everyone who came out on a Sunday afternoon to be part of the conversation.

ICYMI, Film Festival Today sat down with director Lacey Schwartz Delgado for an in-depth conversation about making 'Re/Pair'.

On what she was looking for in these conversations: "There's not one person in this film who is a representative of their community.

They are representing themselves... there is such diversity, such a spectrum of thoughts and feelings on countless issues."

On the difference between talking and debating: "Talking can still involve tension. Debating is more like you go to debate club, you learn how to argue one side of the argument no matter what.

That wasn't what we were interested in, but it doesn't mean we're avoiding difference of opinion in any way."

Festival Highlight

RE/PAIR
In an increasingly divided world, RE/PAIR brings together 19 pairs of Black and Jewish thinkers, some longtime collaborators, others meeting for the first time, to engage in wide-ranging, unguarded conversations about their families, communities, shared histories, and points of difference.

Q&A with Director Lacey Schwartz Delgado follows the screening.

"We're excited to take it on the road, to all sorts of spaces, especially with young people," Lacey Schwartz Delgado told The Knockturnal at the TIFF premiere of 'Re/Pair'.

"This is not in any way just about Blacks and Jews. It connects to so many other people as well."

Ashley Jackson, who spoke candidly about her own conversion to Judaism in the film, added her own thanks to Lacey directly:

"The courage and bravery you instilled in each of us to go on this journey. You being the director that you were made me feel safe to share this part of my journey."
