The Lafayette Symphony Orchestra is such an important part of the fabric of Downtown Lafayette. Through music, creativity, and a shared love for the arts, they bring people together and contribute so much to the cultural identity of our community. A thriving downtown is about more than just businesses and buildings. It’s about the people, experiences, and organizations that make it special, and we are incredibly fortunate to have the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra as part of ours!

Asked & Answered: On William Grant Still and orchestrating the timbre of the Spiritual 🗣️ 🪉

In October 2025, I sat down for a chat on BBC Radio 3's Saturday Morning with Tom Service. Tom and I had a lovely time covering many topics: beekeeping, relationships with orchestras, legacy, the future of classical programming, and more. 🎵

Here's an excerpt from one of Tom's questions. Hear the complete interview on @bbcradio3 site, link in bio.

How does someone go from tending beehives to standing on the conductor's podium?

Join us for an intimate dinner and conversation with Lafayette Symphony Orchestra Conductor and Artistic Director Kellen Gray as he shares the journey that led him to the orchestra stage. Along the way, you'll hear the stories that have shaped his career and artistic vision.

Kellen will also offer a behind-the-scenes look at the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra's 2026-27 season theme, Listen Together: why he chose it, what it means to him, and how it reflects the role music can play in bringing people together.

Finally, get an insider's preview of our season-opening concert, AutochthonoUS (September 26). Discover the stories behind the music, learn what to listen for, and gain a deeper appreciation for the works before you experience them live.

Following the talk, there will be a 3 course family style dinner prepared by Chef Andrew and the culinary team at The Whittaker Inn.

Whether you're a longtime LSO supporter or simply curious about the person behind the baton, this special evening offers a unique opportunity to connect with Kellen in a relaxed setting over a delicious meal.

Space is limited. Advance reservations are required at https://twinn.my.canva.site/beyond-the-theatre

AutochthonoUS: Stories of WE the People

26 Sept 2026
Lafayette Symphony Orchestra
Long Center for the Performing Arts
Lafayette, IN

Autochthonous refers to peoples originating in the place where they are found presently - despite ancestral background or genetic origination. This program celebrates the many vibrant and multifaceted identities of the collective American spirit, but it was inspired by this single word that is a constant compass toward unity.

Leonard Bernstein: Overture to 'Candide'
William Grant Stil: Symphony No. 4 “Authocthonous”
Kimo Williams: Fanfare for Life
Leonard Bernstein: Symphonic Dances from 'West Side Story

'AutochthonoUS: Stories of WE the People'

On 26 Sept 2026, I'll share the stage with the Lafayette Symphony in a program that was inspired by a single, powerful word: 'Autochthonous.'

It's not a word that is often used in American English anymore, and when doing so, it's often used interchangeably with the word Indigenous. While 'Indigenous' refers to first inhabitants, 'Autochthonous' describes people rooted so deeply in a place that they become part of its soil - regardless of ancestral origin. In what feels like a very divided country, our shared relationship to this land is the common bond we share. The success of the American experiment depends on our willingness to let these multifaceted identities coexist with dignity.

For these reasons, I'm excited to open this season of celebrating American music with a program under this banner. You'll find the concert repertoire below, and a link to the Spotify playlist for more in the bio.

PROGRAM:
Leonard Bernstein: Overture to Candide
William Grant Still: Symphony No. 4 'Autochthonous'Symphony Kimo Williams: Fanfare for Life
