Athens Greece - Artist Film Workshop presents: THE ROAD #6 “The old and the new - but mostly the new” – films by the 16mm experimental collective Artist Film Workshop (AFW)

Founded in 2009 in Melbourne - Australia, AFW is a non-profit artist-run collective mainly focused on celluloid experimental film work. It provides access and resources to analogue filmmaking, as well as sporadic workshops and also monthly 16mm screenings at local venues.

THE ROAD focuses mainly on new and selected works, all projected in 16mm.
We will also start the night with music by our dear local friend Lyrical Phosphorus @lyrical_phosphorus on live electronics (also co-director of one of the films in the program)

📣 SHORT CIRCUIT EPISODE 5 - TONIGHT AT 9PM ON CHANNEL 31!

RMITV’s Short Circuit is back with a line-up of innovative experimental shorts, exclusively by Victorian filmmakers.

Host Patrick Scott is joined by acclaimed filmmaker and academic Dirk De Bruyn. In tonight’s episode, we chat about making films on a micro-budget, the boundary-pushing film techniques of ‘expanded cinema’, and the origins of filmmaking co-ops in 20th-century Melbourne.

Tonight, we’re very lucky to host Short Circuit from Palace Church Street. Formerly Dendy Brighton, the new iteration is resplendent in chic furnishings that evokes the Golden Age of Hollywood. Well worth checking out if you’re in the Brighton area!

📺 Tune in to Channel 31 at 9pm, or the live premiere on YouTube shortly after 9pm.

📣 EPISODE 5 SHORT FILM LINE-UP ANNOUNCEMENT

In episode 5, we have the great pleasure to share some innovative experimental short films from some truly original voices in Victorian filmmaking!

We begin with ‘The Moment of Air Before a Whisper’ (2020), Melody Woodnutt’s fascinating exploration of the concept of anagnorisis - a literary technique that captures the moment between ignorance and knowledge. Melody’s work traverses 16mm film, large-scale installations and photographic stills that deconstruct light, sound and spatial practices. @laglina

Also featured is the distinctly tactile ‘Intimacy is Hair in the Drain’ (2015) by Hanna Chetwin. In association with the Artist Film Workshop, the 16mm film examines the daily grooming rituals of a shared home, with the filmmaker using her own hair as a rayogram mask. Hanna’s film work explores photographic, camera-less imaging techniques that interrogates the everyday and environmental minutiae.

Finally, we have Dirk De Bruyn’s latest film ‘Traceless Traces’ from 2024. This short film bridges the gap between analogue and digital media, enunciating a trace-less trauma embedded in the surface of materialist film.

📺 Short Circuit airs Monday’s 9pm on Channel 31.

The first Asian film lab meeting was hosted by Big River in Kanchanaburi, Thailand.

This one week meeting brought together 68 Asian non-digital filmmakers to talk about environmental issues, film restoration, and film processing.

Every night, we screened more than ten experimental films on film, with live improvised performances.

The screenings and performances took place at a local motorcycle workshop, on a rooftop, in an old paper factory in Kanchanaburi, and even on a large boat on the river.

The program included technical exchanges between film labs, experimental film screenings, live film performances, film workshops, and a visit to the Bangkok Film Archive.

Many thanks and respect to all Asian experimental filmmakers. See you all next time.
