In Good Taste with Nkemka Uche

Lagos Watching started not with money, but with a camera. Unable to afford the watches he was drawn to, Nkemka Uche did the next best thing — he documented them, turning his photography into a quiet archive of a watch culture most people didn’t even know existed in Lagos.

What grew from that decision is now a lens into one of the most fascinating and underestimated collector communities in the world. A city where watches that aren’t even sold in Nigeria sit on the wrists of Nigerians. Where a Tiffany-stamped Patek Philippe Nautilus — one of eight in the world — found its home. Where the depth of collecting, he tells us, rivals what you’d find at major watch events in Singapore.
But for Lagos Watching, it was never just about the watches. It was always about the people wearing them, and the stories hiding beneath the case.

This week, on In Good Taste, a conversation on taste, culture, and what it means to document a world most people are only just beginning to see.

Baltic Heures du Monde

I dropped by the @balticwatches boutique with @lagoswatching the other day to check out their new world timers.

With #watchesandwonders nearly done and dusted, and big releases out of Swatch Group and the relaunched Universal Geneve, the Baltic launch seems like a distant memory. But these far more affordable pieces are hard to forget, with their clever design, catchy stone centers, and perfect sizing. That these watches are actually attainable doesn't hurt either!

The three releases, utilizing a sporty blue sodalite, a brilliant tiger's eye, and a subtle, stealthy labradorite, are absolutely stunning, somehow managing to fit an immense amount of information and text in an elegant package.

The 37mm sizing is perfect, and the 11.3mm thinness (much of which is from the domed crystal) keeps the watch sleek on the wrist. The 100m water resistance, matte ceramic bezel, and completely lumed dial (including the bezel) modernize the whole package, while retaining Baltic's signature neo-vintage charm.

My only real criticism, beyond the lack of on-the-fly adjustment on their clasp (typical of Baltic), is that the Soprod movement used is a caller GMT. The hour hand does not jump, which I much prefer for a travel-oriented watch.

World timers are often reserved for the upper echelon of watchmaking. But Baltic manages to deliver these at a very fair €1300 (a little extra for a handsome, if underbaked bracelet).

How good is this? Audemars Piguet just dropped a stone-dial watch. Meet the Établisseur Galet. Tiger’s eye and turquoise, set into a softly rounded, pebble-shaped case. Both dial and form nod to the hues of Lac de Joux, just above Le Brassus, the heart of AP. The Galet is a jewellery-first piece, complete with a shaped movement and an open caseback. It’s giving relaxed and quietly luxurious. I’m obsessed 😍 @audemarspiguet
