A City-wide celebration of Arts and Health in Lagos Nigeria

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Throwback to the Opening Ceremony of the Lagos Arts & Health Festival 2026
As we look back on an unforgettable four days of creativity, connection, care and community, we are reminded of the incredible energy that filled our Official Opening Ceremony on 27 August.

Hosted at the beautiful Quintessence Gallery, surrounded by the powerful ORI exhibition, the evening brought together artists, healthcare professionals, community leaders, partners, volunteers and changemakers united by a shared vision of healthier, more connected communities through the arts.

We remain deeply grateful to our Festival Leadership team members, partners, speakers, advisory board members, volunteers and every participant who helped make this festival possible. Your passion, generosity and belief in this movement created something truly special.

This beautiful reel by FIIMU Productions captures just a glimpse of the magic we shared together.

Thank you for being part of the journey. The memories remain, and the movement continues.

The Paradox of Performance

I recently read @minna_dundas’ article for @latitudes.online and it made me stop and think.

Performance art is valuable partly because it cannot be reduced to an object. Yet the market often requires it to become an object before it can recognise that value.

This feels particularly relevant to performance art in Lagos.

I have always been interested in what happens when the body becomes the medium. When the artwork is something that happens between bodies, space, memory and time.

In my performances, including Catharsis, Alternative Truths, Leave the Leaves, The Song of the Soil, The Earth Remembers, Slow Monuments and Return the Leaves, the work has never been about the moment alone.

There is the performance. Then there is what remains: the photograph, film, object, text, memory, impact and archive.

But none of these is quite the work itself.

Lagos’ art market is expanding rapidly, yet much of its collecting infrastructure still favours what can be owned, displayed and resold.

Performance refuses to fit neatly into that model.

What does it mean to collect an action? Can you acquire an encounter? How do we value the labour of something that disappears?

Performance art does not lack value. Our systems of value are simply not yet expansive enough.

I am not convinced the answer is to make performance more convenient for the market by producing an object simply because objects are easier to price and sell.

Perhaps we need to rethink what collecting can mean.
A performance can have a score, archive, film, research, intellectual property and future activations. These can be preserved, commissioned and supported without pretending they replace the live encounter.

So perhaps the question is not “How do we make performance sell?”
But, “How do we build a market that knows how to support performance art?”

•That means paying the artist
•funding research and rehearsal
•supporting documentation and archiving
•thinking beyond acquisition towards patronage.

Because an artist’s labour does not begin when the audience enters the room.

And it certainly does not end when the performance is over.

Still feels surreal that we are only seven months old.

There is still so much we want to do this year, and we can’t wait to have you be part of it 🫶

First live painting called, ‘Who Dey house’. Shoutout to everyone @lahfestival who took the time to be a part of my first live painting session. Thoroughly enjoyable process and I’m seriously considering doing another live painting at someone’s wedding.

THE FILM ENDED. THE CONVERSATION DIDN’T.

What happens when a story brings something to the surface?

At the Lagos Art & Health Festival @lahfestival , our films became the starting point for a powerful Q&A with mental health expert @jewinnerchristopher exploring the emotions, experiences and realities reflected in the stories we tell.

We didn’t just watch the films.

We talked about what they made us feel.
We asked difficult questions.
We listened.
We learned.

This is why we believe in the power of storytelling as a tool for social change.

Because sometimes, a story is all it takes to start a conversation that needed to happen.

Watch the conversation. Then ask yourself: what did the story make you think about?

The conversation doesn’t end here it continues at SIGNS OF SILENCE where we are Breaking the Barrier of Silence Through Cinema.

THE STORIES WE TELL. THE CONVERSATIONS WE START.

September is a time to deepen conversations around mental health and suicide prevention.

Through Signs of Silence, we are telling stories that explore grief, loneliness, rejection, emotional isolation and the struggles people often carry in silence.

These are not just stories for the screen. They reflect real experiences that, when left unspoken and unsupported, can become overwhelming and, for some, contribute to suicidal thoughts and suicide.

At the Lagos Art & Health Festival, our films became the starting point for a beautiful and honest conversation with audiences and a mental-health expert.

This is why we believe storytelling can be a powerful tool for social change.

Our stories create the space to see, feel, reflect, speak and listen.

Because the film ends, but the conversation doesn’t.

Last Sunday, I had the honour of speaking at the Lagos State Art & Health Festival.

It’s always such a delight to speak about wellness, especially to a younger demographic. Equipping young people with the right knowledge empowers them to make healthier choices today and, ultimately, reduce their risk of chronic diseases as they grow.

Wellness is not just about treating illness; it’s about building healthy habits, making informed choices, and investing in a healthier future.

Grateful for the opportunity to share, connect, and contribute to conversations that inspire healthier lives. 💚

@yadichinma you such a gem. Seeing all the work you put in behind the scenes.
I’m super proud of you. Take your flowers 💐

I still can’t believe it’s been six months already.

Six months of making room for each other, and an evening that left me completely enveloped in gratitude.

A very special thank you to my friend, @myfriendscallmebigenyi, founder of @lagoskpoetics, who ended up hosting the evening. You held the room so beautifully. ❤️

Thank you @lahfestival, for having us as part of the festival. Thank you @elpadrino.ng, for giving us your space and making room for this gathering. Thank you @satfarmsng, for keeping us refreshed with your fruit juices. Thank you @yadichinma, festival director who also completed the evening with her presence and help.

Thank you @thenutsco, for the snacks that added to our evening.

Thank you @terrencewarebebe, for capturing these moments.

And to every writer, poet, musician, comedian, and storyteller who shared their work with us, thank you for trusting the room with your art.

Can’t wait to gather again. 🫶

Colors of Hope 🎨🤍

What happens when art finds its way into a place where people are fighting, healing, waiting, and hoping?

During the Lagos Arts and Health Festival 2026, the Colors of Hope workshop, facilitated by Josephine Iyabo, brought the healing power of creativity into the Oncology Ward.

Patients (children and adults alike) were invited to step away, even briefly, from the routines of treatment and express themselves through colour, painting, and art. But the invitation did not stop with the patients.

Doctors, nurses, hospital staff, parents, caregivers, and loved ones visiting those on the ward were all encouraged to pick up a brush, paint a canvas, and simply create.

Because art does not ask who you are.
It creates a space where everyone can participate, connect, express, and breathe.

For a moment, the ward became more than a place of treatment. It became a space filled with colour, connection, laughter, expression, and hope. 🌈

This is what the Lagos Arts and Health Festival is about — exploring how art can meet us in the most human moments of life and remind us that healing can take many forms.

Colors of Hope — because even in difficult places, there is room for colour. 🎨🤍

Facilitated by Josephine Iyabo
Festival Director: Yadichinma Ukoha-Kalu (Multidisciplinary Artist)
