Dylan Forsythe '27, a Neuroscience and Philosophy double major, studied abroad at Freie Universität Berlin in Berlin, Germany last year. "Traveling somewhere new has, ironically, taught me that traveling doesn’t give you anything that you already don’t seek inside of yourself. The well-traveled vagabond can only be as wise as he has decided to be before he set foot out the door. In this way, I would never recommend that someone study abroad or travel to try to change themselves as a person. What I do recommend is that, besides the practical justifications (learning a new language, wanting to immigrate, family ties, etc.), traveling helps you shed misguided misconceptions about the human condition."

The first African student to enroll and to graduate from Lake Forest College was Joseph Wekesa Wangagi Obudo from Kakamega, a town in western Kenya. Joseph was recommended to College Admissions by Tom Mboya, president of the African American Students Foundation, Inc., and a politician instrumental to the 1964 founding of the independent Republic of Kenya after years of British colonial rule. Joseph had attended Quaker schools in Kenya, graduating from high school in 1958 and spending 1959 teaching history and geography. He was poised to attend a East German university, but was offered a full tuition scholarship at Lake Forest College, and arrived for the fall of 1960. His travel to the United States was made possible by the Kennedy Airlift program, which funded travel of East African students to study in North America from 1959 to 1963. (A fellow beneficiary of the Kennedy Airlift program, Wangari Maathai, went on to be the first African woman to win the Nobel Prize for her environmentalism!)

His freshman year, 1960-1961, the Alumni Bulletin discussed the impact of 15 ‘foreign’ students on campus. Joseph’s international peers while a student at Lake Forest College came from Thailand, Iran, Japan, Iraq, Denmark, Hong Kong, Germany, Sweden, Scotland, France, Finland, Argentina, Morocco, and ‘Northern Rhodesia’ - today the independent country of Zambia. Also enrolled Fall 1960, but graduating in August 1964 rather than Joseph’s June, was one other student from Africa: Michael Magambo from Kampala, Uganda (pictured with Joseph in slide 1). Joseph distinguished himself as an athlete on the men’s soccer team. Soccer only became a varsity sport at the College in Fall 1961; Joseph immediately was awarded a varsity letter. In June of 1964, Joseph not only received his B.A. in Economics, but also was named a Patterson Scholar in recognition of his academic success.

Gladys Emma Groner and Grace Elizabeth Groner were members of Lake Forest College's Class of 1931. 👯‍♀️

Gladys and Grace's parents had passed away by the time they turned 12 years old. Friend of the family George Anderson took the twins in and paid their Lake Forest College tuition. Grace Groner went on to work as a secretary for the next 43 years at Abbott Laboratories. Three shares of Abbott stock she purchased in 1935 grew, during a lifetime of her careful reinvestment, into a fortune. She funded a scholarship program that allowed a few Lake Forest College students a year to travel internationally, and before she passed away in 2010 she arranged for a foundation to continue carrying out her generosity for future students. Her small house, now called Grace's Cottage, was also given to the College as a residence for winners of her foundation's scholarships. The 7 million dollars Grace bequeathed (worth more than 10 million today, factoring in inflation) came as a delight and a shock to many. The Chicago Tribune's coverage of her story was headlined "Secret millionaire donates fortune to Lake Forest College."

Thank you to @elizabherb for spotting the Groner twins featured in a recent post of Eino J. Macklin's (Class of 1929) photo album, and bringing Grace and Gladys' history to light. The small connections that can be found across archival collections are a treat!

#ThrowbackThursday: How Archives Grow

Not everything in the archives comes from a college office. Some of our most fascinating materials arrive from far beyond our campus, like this Class of 1929 student photo album, donated by the daughter of an alum through the mail and accompanied by a hand-signed letter, nearly 100 years after its creation. 📬

Archives grow through many channels: personal donations, transfers from departments, even long-forgotten boxes uncovered in attics or closets during a move. Each item, whether it’s a letter, a photo, or a student handbook, adds depth to the story of Lake Forest College.

This album of photos by student Eino J. Macklin is just one example of how everyday memories become part of our collective history.

📚 If you or someone you know has materials that help document student life, campus culture, or college traditions, we’d love to hear from you.

Because every piece of the past helps us better understand where we’ve been and where we’re going.
