On this coast, the day starts before the tide.
Oyster farmers are already out on the water and skippers are checking the wind while the town is still asleep. They get up early because they love the water, and the hours before the tide are the best of the day.
For Ocean Bottle, that’s also when the work gets done. Every bottle sold pays to collect a thousand plastic bottles on land, before the tide can carry them out to sea.

It’s the same early start, and it comes from the same love of the water.

Before the tide

We fight for the ocean that made us, one tide at a time
 Tofino is where the road stops on the west coast of Vancouver Island, and plenty of the people who drove out to the end of it have stayed. The longer they spend in the water, the more they look after it, and this coast is full of proof. The whales are back in Howe Sound, following the herring home.
Ocean Bottle started from the same place, out of love for the ocean and a grudge against plastic. Buying a bottle means joining the people who are up before the tide.
It’s a fight, and we rather enjoy it.

“I hate it but I’m frozen not knowing what to do.
Just filled w rage and a sharp tongue with a bit of sugar on the tip, whenever a man shows his true garbage skin - I strike back with a sarcastic, truthful and harsh comment wrapped in honey…
The honey is for protection.
But I wish I didn’t have to slather it on.

Without it - i might lose my job / be known for being “hard to work with”
Without it - they may say “it must be that time of the month” behind my back.
Without it - I may be hurt physically
Without it, I’m open and vulnerable to the power of the patriarchy and its delusions and performative actions.

Without it I have no protection.
So I dip the truth in honey.
A little sweetness around the blade…”
